Picked up the Nite Ize LED for the mini Mag.

I have the 1W LED and the "IQ" switch which lets you select 3 different light intensities and 2 strobes. The switch also acts as a voltage regulator. The switch at the bottom also "blinks" every three seconds so it is easy to find at night. I think it makes the 2AA mini-mag actually worth something. I've had mine for about a month now and love it.

Troutfisher,
Again admitting my ignorance, can you not just unscrew the tail cap until the switch no longer works? Chris

Yeah, I am sure you could. But for me, its just as easy to turn the head of the light to turn it on.

I am not a huge fan of the mag lights anymore, not after I bought my first Surefire. But, they are nice lights, and with the LED assembly, they fit the bill for a light I can store in my kit. I wanted something that was cheap, waterproof, had a LED bulb(or three), and could take a lithium AA, or AAA battery. I also needed enough light to be able to safely navigate at night or maybe search for firewood if need be. The mini-mag light with LED conversion kit just might be it.

Another light I think I might like more is the Gerber Infinity Ultra Task Light. Its small, fairly bright, takes a common battery size, and is waterproof. It also uses a LED bulb, and has a twist tail cap for a power switch. Here it is:

Trout,
I am never without my gerber task light, I have 2 and one is with me 24/7 and the other is on my bedside table. I know nothing about minimag conversions but I have been using the gerber for years, throw a lithium AA in and forget about it, I think the batteries and the bulbs are rated forever. It is not a tactical light or super bright but puts out enough light for me to do what I need to do and is built like WWII german tank. If you can't tell I like these little gerber lights. :o Chris

I have the CMG infinity, before Gerber took it over. It is a good little light and has been in my truck for about 6 or more years. I think the Gerber uses a brighter bulb. I don't think I've ever changed the batteries.

How bright is it compared to a mini-mag light or Photon micro-light?

I haven't use a minimag since the 80s but I believe the gerber is quite a bit brighter, the photon's strength is the amount of light for the size. The Gerber beats it but is many times the photon's size and weight, however the gerber is dead easy to change batteries, that can be found almost anywhere, not so with the photon. I am keen to try the fenix lights that use AAs but as happy as I am with the gerbers can't see spending the extra cash, and the gerber has a much better run time. I have used my gerber as a reading light in the field, for hours, and it hasn't let me down yet. Chris

EDIT: Another thing I like about the gerber, compared to the photon or the minimag, is the ability to turn the gerber on and it stay on continous or a momentary switch for quick jobs.

...if my switch failed in the 'on' position, I would turn it off with the bezel, the same way the Mini Mag was originally turned off. Can you not do this with your conversion?
Doc, no can do. The "off" position is with the bezel cranked all the way down onto the body of the light. When I crank mine as far down as physically possible, the LED's are still on. Hence the battery-reversing gyrations with the tailcap and end-most battery to turn the light off.

As for turning the tailcap out only far enough to disengage the switch, by the time I disengage the switch that way, the tailcap is completely unscrewed from the body of the Mini-Mag light.

On my Inova X02 and other such tailcap-switch lights, I do as others have noted and twist the tailcap out into the "permanently off" region of the thread travel before putting the light in my pocket or other travel/storage locations.

FWIW, the only troubles I've had with my Inovas (4 XM(T)-5's, the X02, and probably a dozen or so of their Mini-LED (Photon-II look-alike) model lights are:
1. an intermittent slight flicker from the regulating circuit on one or two of the XM's
2. the Mini-LED on my 24/7 carry rig coming up with dead batteries because the protruding slide-switch got turned on and I didn't notice the glow in my jeans. (insert your own humorous/snide comment here ;) )

I got the N.I. upgrade with my MiniMag and love it. The only thing I miss is the twist flood to focus feature.
