I'm very excited to get it! It's $50 more than I was hoping to spend, but everyone here has really talked it up. I'll definitely post some pictures. Anything special I should try using it on? I could probably shave with it

The M4 will take a lot of punishment and ask for more so use it on everything! While you're waiting for it, apostlep on YouTube does a nice review on it if you haven't watched it already. One thing to keep in mind is sharpening it will take a bit of patience and more time than many other steels. So far I've gotten away with no more than touching her up a few times.

I missed your message! I actually did randomly catch his review. He has two videos on it, and in one of them there is a mirror polish on the blade. It looks absolutely stunning. I think he said it took HIM a couple of hours to put that edge on, so I'm guessing that would be impossible for me unless I sent it out and paid for it to be honed. It looked pretty amazing though.

I'm pretty excited to get this knife. I've shown numerous people photos in anticipation :) I'm hoping it arrives before I go camping on Wednesday.

Diamonds are your friend with m4... I can work one of my many m4 piece hard and bring it back in a half hour. Apostle is working with other guys knives and is a perfectionist, it would suck to have to explain scratching that coating to a guy paying top dollar for your services.
I have had over a dozen benchmades and sold them all, the stryker II may be the one that sticks...

This is well above your budget (more like 650), but I use it all the time and the damascus works fine in cutting boxes, etc. It does have a ZDP-189 core, though. I post it just to see if the configuration is what you are thinking of.

Hey Russ, do you own an Axis Stryker II? I think the general opinion is that Benchmade makes nice knives, but they're overpriced. This one being one of the better price/value ratios.

Thank you for sharing Locutus. That is a beautiful knife. I think when the time comes, I'll get a nice damascus knife, but right now I don't have the budget for it.

they are overpriced for the crappy quality you get from benchmade. thats the problem. and dont get me wrong, i love my benchmades, and if you send it in to benchmade to resolve those issues they are happy to do that, but they shouldnt get to us in that condition brand new, requiring it to be sent in. mostly blade centering, uneven blade grinds, fit and finish issues.

otherwise you can always goto ebay to get them cheaper than there msrp, which is what i did for my 940-1

Benchmade knives are functional, and they have a nice appearance. However, yeah I've had some fit and finish issues on occasion as well. All that said? I think you'll like your decision man.

One thing you need to take into account with damascus? Is the process by which it was made. You can have a damascus with a whole number of different cores and finishes which will alter how the blade performs. Frankly that's why I avoid the stuff entirely, I am much more fond of modern supersteels (carbon and stainless). Which then further break down into what you're using and what you intend to do with it. Elmax for example makes an excellent slicer, as does M390. But those steels are pretty hard, and they can get tricky to sharpen. When you get your knife? Make sure you regularly strop the edge, because that will keep your knife sharp without needing to sharpen it.

Great news! I got the knife. Unfortunately, I'm on vacation in Kauai and don't have it with me, but when I get back I'll post pictures. It looks really great. The scales feel really nice too.

I was a bit worried, but the blade is perfectly centered! Any other things I should check for quality?

Don't sweat the details Daniel.....just enjoy the snot out of it brother!!
What I do with new knives is put a TINY amount of lube, I use Ballistol or Blue Lube, and flick it till your thumb gets tired!!! It will break in beautifully!!!
You made an excellent choice!!
Joe

Nice! Enjoy the trip!
While you are there, look up a band that started out there named "Pepper". They are probably somewhere out on tour now since they have a relatively new album out.

Enjoy the knife, music, food, and mindset.

Thank you for your continued interest Mo2! I just got back from vacation and things are a little hectic. But I will definitely be posting pictures of my new knife. It's pretty awesome.

Benchmade and their H&K knives are a fantastic choice for a EDC. I would definitely go for them rather than a Kershaw Damascus for an EDC. The Kershaw Damascus will take much more care, they are carbon steel. Not a deal breaker, but something to keep in mind. BM and their H&K knives are very well built, great EDC's that won't disappoint. If you can find the right configuration, take a look at their custom knife configuration website. Good luck on the choice-making!
