Pics!!! and question about my new slicer...

I just got it in the mail! Beautiful to say the least. My only question is why is it so hard to open that it requires two hands? I can see the lockbar is pressed against the blade when closed, but it feels almost like a magnet is holding it closed. I know this is a different detent than my old one, but this is almost too much.

That is definitely too tight, send it to me and let me know what your PayPal email is, I'll reimburse you what you paid for it.

Regards,

Rich - hasn't been able to score an XM-18 production slicer yet....

to everybody who is receiving their knives:

1. did you order direct from Hinderer?

2. around what date did you order them?

I sent my payment in October 18th. The e-mail I got from Rob said about three weeks so it should be fairly soon now.

Duratech 20CV.

Sent payment on the 18th to Rick. Received on Nov 2.

So they got most of them out in 2-3 weeks! That's some good turnover time! Hinderer keeps impressing me more every time I hear about them.

Did the new batch have a card of some sort? I have not seen Rob post anywhere about the steel. I am glad it isnt S35VN.

I asked Rob what steel they were using when I ordered it and he confirmed it is Duratech 20cv. It has also been mentioned several times on other forums as well.

I'm happy about it. I already have a flipper in that steel but it's a safe queen and I've never cut anything with it. My CTS-XHP non-flipper spanto, on the other hand, gets used use all the time. I'm looking forward to putting the slicer through its paces when it gets here. I'd like to see how well one holds up over the other.

Usually if it's something different than 20CV it is stamped on the blade IIRC. Rob has stated also that this run is 20CV. (I'm not a fan of S35VN either...)

XHP would have been my first choice, but 20CV is basically M390 which is a great steel IMO. I have used XHP more and love how sharp I can get te edge and edge retention.

Can you still get the slicer with a spanto tip?

No. The slicer grind has a different overall profile than the spanto grind but the spanto grind is still an available option.

Yes, the Slicer and Spanto are different grinds. There are pics showing the differences. I do find that the XM-18 w/ Spanto slices nicely. I do not own a slicer grind yet. I say yet. I am on the hunt.
What do you guys dislike about S35VN? I EDC a XM-24 in S35VN and have nothing negative to say about it. Please educate me.

This is only my "personal opinion" but the Duratech 20CV XM-18 I have is the toughest steel I've ever owned and I have all 3 types. It's hard as heck to sharpen, holds an edge forever and has a real clean glow to it, even after stonewashing. I love the stuff. I also dig the CTS & S35 VN that Rick uses - it's just like in a perfect world and I could have my choice, that's what it would be. :D

cziv, thank you for a reply.
So, if I am understanding correctly; there is nothing too negative to say about S35VN. But your (and others) preference is for Duratech 20CV. I feel both are great quality steels. I think it boils down to personal preference and availability. If I find a Hinderer at a reasonable price, the blade steel is not my first concern. More concerned with how fast The seller can put it in my hands?!
