Doc,

Your name came up when I was describing different types of firedrills, including the so-called Egyptian firedrill. I think the other guys thought I was BSing them a little....:D

DancesWithKnives

I hope you straightened them out. :D

We had a great time but some new blood is always welcome. This time, all of the attendees neglected to bring flint and steel so we couldn't fool around with that (not that my fresh charcloth would have worked anyway....). Furthermore, we all needed some archery coaching from the likes of Mtnfolk Mike. Hits were made on the target but the form wasn't pretty! So any contributions you can make will be welcomed.

I'll practice my knife and hawk throwing before the next gathering so that I can demonstrate sticking them rather than bouncing them off a mostly dead tree.:p Funny how a short little six-year break in training can negatively impact your performance.

I'm bummed I couldn't make this as well :( Also, sorry Dave, for posting my non-attending status when I found out. I'll refrain from posting attendance status unless I'll actually be attending:thumbup:.

No problem at all---we're just trying to develop positive buzz for future events because the people who have been able to attend have had a great time and we want more to enjoy the experience. Hopefully more will be able to come out to the desert in January.

Thanks a lot for keeping it on your calendar and trying to make it. I'm sure we'll all connect eventually!:D

[Forgot to mention that in addition to Sasha's exotic soup, Mike cooked delicious ribeyes for several of the group and I provided wild boar sausage for Saturday and Sunday breakfasts. Mike also grilled some tasty lunch sausages for everyone.]

I'm sure we'll all connect eventually!:D

I'm sure we will! Especially with all the effort Sasha, you, and others put into organizing and getting these events rolling. Glad everyone had a good time!

Charlieridge: That's smart. I grew up in CA but it is getting a little tough to handle in several respects---most of which I'm not allowed to discuss in this forum.

Mrappraisit: I hope that you can make it to one of these gatherings. We'd love to meet more W&SS members! The January BBIII in the desert should be a lot closer to AZ than Camp Lambertiana above Visalia. However, we'll be having another gathering above Visalia around late April or May of next year in the event that you can't make the desert meetup.

One of the few bummers was that I made a batch of charcloth on Fri. but when we tested it, it didn't seem to want to hold a spark well. I made it out of an old all-cotton Cabela's tennis shirt. It looked and felt fine when it cooled but didn't perform. I've never had that problem before and will have to cook another bunch.

DancesWithKnives

odd.....

With regard to the charcloth, I checked some of the pieces farther down in the charcloth cooker and they feel a little lighter and more flexible than the top couple pieces did. In the next few days I'll test them. It's possible I cooked too big of a batch and got inconsistent results at different levels of the stack.

We will soon be discussing a BBIV at Camp Lambertiana in the Spring. Probably late April or early May. When we get a little farther along on BBIII in the Desert (January), we'll turn to working on the Spring gathering.

We hope to see quite a few new faces and make a number of new friends! So far, these gatherings have worked very well.

Thanks for everyone's interest.

Yes, the charcloth problem arose because I took the test pieces off the top of the stack and they had not "cooked" quite enough. They still had too much cotton content and weren't completely reduced to charcoal sheets. The pieces from farther down in the stack worked well.

Next time I have a BBQ I'll just finish charring the top pieces and they should all be good to go.

After sending out an inquiry to several previous participants and having received no objections, it looks like the next gathering above Visalia will be about the same weekend as this year's Spring gathering: April 30 to May 2. I'll do a separate post on it. Aside from some unusual rain Friday night, the early May weather in Sequoia NF was good.

We hope to see you there!
