pics from my solo 3-days/2-nighter.

Excellent pics and write up! Looks like a great time with some great scenery

Another great picture thread. Thanks for sharing it.

I love the melted nalgene pic:D

thanks. the nalgene bottle is now a cup and used one of the bones as a firesteel handle. both are nice souvenirs from the trip :)

Looks like a nice trip bro and great selection of gear and tools.

Regarding your mat, air decreases in volume as it cools, maybe you mat wasnt fully inflated from the start? Ive tried it myself in subzero temps, but it wasnt anything a few hard blows didnt fix. Now i inflate it as soon as i set up camp, and reinflate it just before i hit the sack. Most mats are pretty robust, i have no qualms trusting them.

Yep, thats a birch tree.

thanks, bro. as for the mat, i'm pretty sure it was fully inflated as i like to sleep as comfy as i can. there is the possibility that i didn't tighten the valve enough or a tiny hole got burned in but not big enough for me to detect. my lightweight fleece hat has a hole in it now and i was sitting on that pad close to the fire prior too.

thanks for the birch tree confirmation as well! i'm now confident in my tree id skills, at least 2 - birch and beech trees in my area. the rest i'll still describe to friends as hard, harder, hardest woods to chop :p

The "what's this plant" looks like Gold Thread. Next time root it up real easy-like and see if the roots are Yellow, and i mean Yellow:)
One of the best for chancre sores:thumbup:

thanks for the tip. if i see more i'll dig one up for closer inspection.

good spot man, looks like a fantastic area. what style of pants have ya got there?

it's a north face paramount peak convertible pants (the legs zip off and convert to shorts). very durable and it has a nice weave to it so that torns doesn't snag as easily. i've scraped against rocks too and after 2 yrs with them they still look new...i'm very happy with them.

Wonderful post. From the look of those old foundations ?, I would have brought my metal detector along, probably find some old coins.

thanks, man. not really sure what they are. they're even arranged in rock walls that goes on for miles in this area and i just happen to stumble upon this one while wandering around on a previous hike. another pic from a previous hike:

awesome thread and wonderful pics. Thanks alot.

thanks, man.

Thanks for taking the time to post, looks like a fun weekend

thanks, man.

Great thread. No spark holes in the tarp I trust?

thanks, ken. no holes in the tarp thankfully. next time i think i'll use a cheap hardware store tarp close to the fire and save that one for the back area/lean-to config. it's too damn nice a tarp to risk burning holes in it.

Excellent pics and write up! Looks like a great time with some great scenery

thanks!

Great Photos and story!!!

THANKS for talking the time to post

thanks, dr. bill!

You have a really small water jug.
I use a few 1qt nalgene's

That looks like a perfect getaway! Thanks for sharing and for posting such a detailed pictorial of your adventure!

Hi JV3. Your trip rocks man. Awesome !
That set up with the MSR is my next rig I'm going to work on. I saw it in another forum as well. I've been looking for a good solo pot setup and that looks ideal.

That orange Military...dammit ! I think I'm gonna need one in a paycheque or 2 ,lol. I needs me a good high-end folder that is easy to spot in the woods.

Have a great New Year Bro.

Pete

JV3, that was one of the best posts i've seen in so long!! THANK YOU, I'm sure that upload was a pain the @$$ - great job, looks like you had an amazing time!

thanks, man! yeah, those msr pots are very versatile, just need to add that small mod for hanging ability.
as for the orange military, sorry bro but i think it was a limited run. the site i bought it from no longer lists it and so does other sites from a google search. see post #5 on the spyderco forum: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/910934-Orange-Military-Paperwork. i guess i lucked out when i decided to sell the black version and kept this orange one instead.

have a great new year to you and your family as well, pete.

Thanks for the thread. It took me away from this city for a while.

you're welcome.

thanks! i was almost back there again while editing/uploading them so it wasn't too bad. it extended the enjoyment i got from the trip. glad you like 'em.

Awesome pics, I've been on plenty of solo one nighters, but never several days. Nice set up, but I've ditched the air mats as well. I can't find the leak in two of mine, so I keep using my RidgeRest. At first I thought you had a Kifaru Woobie/Doobie, but it turns out to be your sleeping bag. Also, "red bear bag" through me as well, cause Red Bear is a guitar pic company. I thought "they make outdoor gear too!"
I also switched to the SS Guyot bottles. I can boil in them, and only the lids are plastic, they come off for the boiling.
Thanks for all the pics, and taking the time to do this thread.

I really enjoyed your post. Very well done and I appreciate the effort and knowledge you put out. Thanks.

Thanks for all the pics. Looks like you had a great time.

Tips for air mat leak finding:

(1) Fill bathtub with some water, then submerge inflated mat into the water. Look for bubbles to help pinpoint leak location.
--- or ---
(2) Mix water & dish detergent solution. Spray solution onto inflated mat and look for bubbles forming at leaky hole.

HTH.

you're welcome! i did bring my kifaru woobie - in later pics it was stuffed inside the sleeping bag for extra warmth.

i do have a couple of kleen kanteens but i still prefer using the nalgenes - i just have an illogical need to see the water level. one tip i read from another forum is to mix a teaspoon of vodka per liter of water to lower the freezing point. i refuse to try it though since i know i'll deliberately confuse it with a teaspoon of water for every liter of vodka :D

thanks! most of what i know i learned from the posters here

A grand adventure and wonderful after-action report! I'm very jealous and just wish that I could get out camping more than I do. Hurry up with the next one!

Great trip, I'm pretty jealous. Thanks for taking the time to show us what kit you're using and how you're finding it. Always refreshing to hear an honest opinion on certain bits of kit that have a 'reputation' for being great but that sometimes doesn't live up to that for every user.

thanks! i take gas money donations :D i'll probably head out again tomorrow since i have a day off but it won't be anything like this trip. i'll just test my cheap, hardware-bought saw and will post a review of it on the outdoor gear sub-forum.

Sweet looking trip and AWESOME pictures!! Im just getting into backpacking now. I just got a pack, stove, sleeping pad and a few others for christmas so excited to get out in the springtime!!

Awesome trip report JV3! Makes my hectic day’s work over here a little more bearable.
Love the camp set up! I’ve fallen in love with the Sea to Summit folding bucket (10 liters). Since most of our camps are usually a short walking distance from camp, I can carry a quite a bit of water back for filtering, the dog or boiling. It also folds up quite compactly and works like a charm…not knocking your water jug, but it’s nice to have that folding bucket store in a very compact fashion.

I noticed you Woobie, what sleeping bag were you using?
