pics of camping trip with a broken knife

Perhaps poor tempering and/or abuse.

I think that many knives are tempered in the temperature ranges known to cause trouble in low alloy steels, 450-600 degrees F. Mete, have you seen any evidence of this causing trouble in blades?

Send it in. It can't do you any good any more, and they might decide to hit you with a replacement. Send them the story just as you presented it to us.

As I am the second owner of this knife I feel that in itself voids the warranty. I am sure the knife is more than 5 years old as too the type of sheath. I would not call the use I used the recon for really abuse, as I have done the same chores plus more with my Becker and an Ontario pilot knife. It is true the worst thing that could happen is, they don't send my knife back. I think I will send it in just to see how they will respond (how they really stand behind their products) what do you guys think?

Thanks,
John

The recon has been sent with a letter linking to this post. I will let you all know what happens as it unfolds.

Thanks,

Funny.

If it were a Kershaw, Buck, Spyderco, or Benchmade (or many others) we wouldn't even be talking about this. It'd just be sent in and they'd make it right.

Be interesting to see what CS does.

That being said, I've batoned my Trailmaster to the point of denting the spine and it hasn't broken. I used a 4# sledge hammer to do the pounding too.

Here is the email I got back from CS.

"Dear Mr. King,

I have looked at your photos (very nice job) and based on the location of the break, I would hazard a guess that there was a forging defect in the blade. I will not be able to confirm this until I have the blade in-hand for evaluation. There shouldn't be a problem with replacing, although we no longer carry the Carbon V products. If a replacement is warranted, we will be replacing it with the new Recon Tanto in AUS8A with black teflon finish.

Michele"

I am emailing to inform you I am sending in my Cold Steel Recon tanto with the carbon V blade. I am sending in the knife with a letter in reference with this email. Here is an explanation of what happened to the knife. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=467170 . This is a forum I am a member of, where I showed pictures and described what happened when The Recon broke. As a consumer of many knives I would like to see how your company stands behind it's products. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at 704-xxx-xxxx, or email Johnwaynesandw@aol.com

Strange that oth breaks were in the same spot with the same shape, they look like the same break.

I just got off the phone with Michele from Cold Steel. She informed me they will be replacing the Recon. It will be made of AUS8A steel, and from Taiwan . I will keep an open mind about it this knife. I know they did stand behind their product in this case which means a lot to me. I would feel more at ease to buy another CS now after dealing with them. As soon as I get the Recon in, I will report the first impressions.

Thanks,
John

I just can't get past the feeling that they're feeling the heat from the opinions of forum members. They've seen how BM, Kershaw, Buck and others treat customers, too. I don't think that their cust serv has been too good in the past. Maybe they're going to change a bit.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate CS like a a lot here do. I've got several CS knives, but I've seen not-so-good cust servffrom them in the past. I hope they see how good cust serv is good for them too.

I am in the same boat as you. I heard some bad stories about the customer service from Cold steel, but with this experience it has been smooths as silk. If this is the way they treat their customers, they must be doing something right.

I will post pics and info on how well the new one holds up.

What is "batoning"?

Anyway, I think anyone who has used a ten year old knife hard, is the second owner, and gets it replaced under warranty, is getting excellent customer service.

Would be interested to hear if the replacement holds up as well.

Batoning I when you use a small log to beat the knife blade down a log to split it. I hope that helps if no let me know and I will desribe it better.

Batoning is breaking a knife with a stick !!.....me2, a complete metallurgical investigation would tell what happened but they might just replace it .

Just a heads up, I was told on 4-18-07 that they would be replacing my recon with a new one. They were receving new recon tantos at the end of the month ( 4-30-07) and they would ship out when they arrived. I just got off the phone with Cold Steel today, and they said it would be the end of June before they got the new shipment because of manufacturing problems.
