pics of camping trip with a broken knife

Just a heads up, I was told on 4-18-07 that they would be replacing my recon with a new one. They were receving new recon tantos at the end of the month ( 4-30-07) and they would ship out when they arrived. I just got off the phone with Cold Steel today, and they said it would be the end of June before they got the new shipment because of manufacturing problems.

John

At least they let you know, instead of letting you hang and wait.

The way I look at it is, They must be trying to get the temper right, and only put good knives out the door. I have no problem waiting for a knife. I would rither wait and get a good knife, as to getting the first batch that came out.

Hopefully it ships when they told you. (or at least in an acceptable time frame) I still think it's great that they decided to replace it.

Well after getting home I see a packeage on the front porch. I was not expecting anything at this time. I looked at who it was from, and it said CSI veture CA. I opened the box and found a new Recon Tanto in the box. I was very pleased to see that it was made in Japan as to Tiawan. The knife looked very good in the Fit and finsh dept. Came Very sharp out of the box. I will put it to use this weekend. I will share my thoughts on this knife before Monday.

Thanks,
John

Awesome! Glad you got the knife. Seems like their customer service went beyond expectations on this one.

Look forward to seeing your review, and any differences you find between the 2 knives.

I agree with you. As far as Fit and Finish between the two they are the same knife. The coating on the new recon is smooth, unlike the rough coating on the old one. I know the old coating held up fairly well, so I am ready to see how the new coating holds up.

A few more words about Cold Steel's customer service: The knife they sent was packaged as if I bought it new from a dealer. What I mean is the knife was wrapped in plastic with a card board sleeve. It had a brand new secure-ex sheath (which is pretty nice IMO). The edge looks like it was mirror polished and is even down the whole blade. It is shaving sharp, but does not push cut news paper, but slices through note book paper. If this steel holds a good edge, I see me buying a SRK soon.

Thanks,
John

Good news!!

I've been watching to see what goes on with this one. Glad that CS cust serv came thru. Now the next thing to look at is if you're not just a 'one off' to please all the critics here. Hope this kind of service becomes routine with these guys.

Let us know how the knife performs for you. Congrats.

Well I had the chance to use my new recon some this weekend. The black coating is nothing like the old stuff. With the first chop I started seeing shinny steel. The edge held up quiet well. I think I may need to reproflie the edge to 15 degrees per side. It chopped through green limbs like it was nothing. I had no problems going through seasoned hardwood. No damage to the edge, and it is still fairly sharp. I was unable to do any batoning, but plan to do some soon. I will try to get some pics. of the recon up soon to show the wear on the coating.

Thanks,
John

I would not have expected coating to stick well to Stainless. Thanks for posting this I would like to see the pics.
