I always read people saying that s30v is brittle so brittle some would have you think it would shatter if it cut anything harder than balsa wood.
Does anyone have any pics of s30v knives that have suffered chipping or tip breaking etc that was so bad it ruined that knife that happened under normal use for that type of knife?.
Ive never had any problems with s30v myself just micro chipping which is normal for most steels and sharpens out no problem but i keep hearing these horror stories and i think ive only seen the odd picture of a bust knife in s30v.
Considering the wide spread use of this steel you would asume if the horror stories were true there would be a load of pics on sites like these of bust sebenzas etc.

I also like to see proves. To me this "brittleness" argument (as well as hard to sharpen) came any time new steel came to the market, but I never see proves and my experience different.

Thanks, Vassili.

My Spyderco Native chipped a little after cutting some beer cans... However, it was easy to restore the damage using the Sharpmaker.

Yeah, let's see those pics! Better yet, send me your screwed up S30V knife. I'll pay all the shipping back and forth. Maybe I'll buy it from you.
I'd like to see, just one time, someone step up to the plate and prove a complaint. I see all this talk of chipping from people who don't even know what a chip is-or a wire edge, duh. Edges breaking off while being sharpened...noone actually believes that crap do they?
I've never seen so many lies and misinformation attached to one subject here as CPM-S30V bladesteel, and it's been going on since before S30V was even available.
I say put up or just shut up.

weird post.

So you need a picture to believe? Why would knife users lie?
I had my benchmade ritter chip. That was 2 years ago.
Was not in the mood to take pictures,if you don't mind.

I have vg10 (love it) knives and D2 knives that I use in the same way and never had a problem.
I will never buy another knife in s30v. My money, my decision.

I'm in no way saying that you can't get a knife that has a bad heat treat, or that you can't get a chip in S30V. That can happen with any steel, and I certainly don't think S30V is the be all end all knife steel. I'm saying I don't believe the "problem" is inherent in the steel. I've had S30V knives that were crappy out of the box, but it was due to the factory sharpening, and a simple sharpening fixed it. That's hardly a reason to go around bashing the steel.

I love s30v. No problems with my native at all, in that regard. I used it one day to strip caulk and paint out of some window frames, and it worked like a charm. No chips at all. I did bend the tip a little, its barely noticeable though.

This is what usually happen.

I remember it was loud cry about ZDP189 being brittle. Kershaw Leek were used as screwdriver to make hole in thick plastic and tip broke. It was all over bladeforums like it was thousand cases of broken ZDP189 blades of something.

Ironically to this thread, guy ask Kershaw to replace it with CPM S30V as tough steel, however I am not sure he uses Leek same way again.

Another complain I remember - someone use CPM S30V knife over dinner to cut stake and it chips, because he cut it on glass plate...

But so far I only see broken blades in Noss tests, but what he is doing is far from being concern for pocket knife even extreme use.

Thanks, Vassili.

Most people around here don't use their S30V-bladed knives hard enough to develop chips, etc.

:) Just kidding.

Professor.

and had intended to use a knife on a recent backpacking trip. Didn't get the blade in time.

From what I've read it's all in the heat treat methods and to what hardness the maker brings it to. Some said CRK wasn't hardening his blades enough (green beret and P1)?

The knife I purchased:

Many of the S30V rumors where started with Cliff Stamp, I'm sure many remember his hatred of this steel and any maker that used it. It is also a pricey steel so many that can not afford knives made with it wanted to believe there is an inherent problem with S30V, this helped spreed these rumors. Truth be told you can chip and steel but I don't think S30V has any problem in this category.

Seems that there's not much actual photo evidence, just folks who had a factory edge that tended to chip and sharpened and bam no more issues. Heat treat decarb/overheating the edge during sharpening can do all sorts of nasty things. I have an Infi Scrapyard SS4 whose edge acted like playdough when it hit anything hard, and I don't mean chopped into a steel bar and twisted around, I mean hitting staples and tapped lightly on the corner of an iron dumbell. Tore the edge all to pieces, it's all better now after I sharpened past the damaged area. Mind you, I did this with a few other knives and none of them had anywhere near the same amount of damage, including a Becker magnum camp that I put a 1/4 inch wide convex bevel on, swung with a bit more gusto that the ss4. Rechecking it confirms that the new edge is in line with what I expect from infi, and mind you the factory edge that got damaged was very obtuse, almost like a stone chisel, and my edge was much thinner :)

You can view his hatred of the steel on Stamp's site. Where on review, it appears hatred is apparent if you squint your eyes, cock your head, and think mean thoughts while reading.

Yeah I think the OP was referring to widespread reports of s30v blades chipping while cutting string/cardboard/green tree branches/saplings etc.

Since a year ago last December, I've been using the heck out of a little Buck Hartsook somebody gave me for a gift. I never thought this little slip of a blade would hold up as an unfolding pocket knife, so I've cut twine, whittle stakes for the tomato plants, cut down cardboard boxes for re-cycle, opened many many plastic blister packages, cut up a chicken here and there for BBQ'ing, and more. So far it's held an exellent edge with no chipping.

The more I used it, the more I liked it and used it more.

Indeed.
Thats what happend for me. The damn thing chipped on paper.
About 3 sharpenings later I reach the good steel and its been a very good steel eversince.

I've had 5 out of 17 knives in S30V that chipped out. Good odds? Dunno. All are gone, and if I knew I had to prove it to someone I would have taken pics. S30V is just a steel, some have been good, some bad.

had to sharpen a paramilitary about 6 times to stop the chipping on cardboard. used to have pics on the comp, but no one in this thread is actually interested in seeing them.
