I did it...
Thanks to Jerry Fisk for giving me the test this weekend..

I was so nervous before taking the test that I couldn't consentrate on anything that was going on at the symposium.I finaly asked Jerry if we could get it over with.He kept asking me if I was sure if the edge I had was the one I wanted (making me more nervous)But I finally said yes..
Here is what happened:
First jerry had me do a couple cuts on the rope he had to test the edge, then he had me cut a piece of the rope I brought just as practice (I missed three times not cutting all the way through, then said awe heck and cut it clean)
Then Jerry said to chop the two 2X4's for the test,no problem and still shaving, now I cut the rope for the real test, cut clean first swing,Still shaving...Now just to make sure that the edge would still hold jerry said to cut the two 2X4's again which I did and even cut through a knote on the second one.Now I had went past the minimum requirements on the test and the knife was still shaving...On to the vice,Jerry had the edge ground of the blade so if for some reason something went wrong sharp pieces of steel wouldn't be flying around. Now he clamped the blade and had me bend it,When I reached 90 degrees he said to stop, checked the edge and not a crack to be found..
YEAAAAAAAAAA:cool: I passed the test...
I used 5160 normalized 4 times after forging,ground,normalized 4 more times,edge quenched once,and drawn back twice in the oven...:D
It was just to COOL to do this, and I was able to calm down and enjoy the rest of the weekend...

The rope...I was running out of arm hair so Jerry had to check for shaving for me...:D
Thanks Jerry,
Bruce

Way to go Bruce! Congratulations! I knew you wouldn't have any problems (though I'd be nervous having Jerry Fisk administer my test also!)

Tell us some more about the Symposium, Did you get a chance to see Rick Furer making steel from ore? How about Don Fogg's damascus class?

Thanks for the pictures, I had no idea you'd have to hold the rope yourself. Did you have to bring your own 2X4s and rope?

Congrats again Bruce,

Boy they sure made you EARN that JS. It sure was fun watching you pass that test! I also took some digital pics of your cutting tests if you want them. Just let me know and I'll zip them up and email them to you. My email is dmelton@stdom.com. I bought some 6150 this weekend and I'm planning on getting out in the shop tonight to put some of this knowledge I got this weekend to work. I gotta get moving, I have got to become a JS! Seeing you pass that test fired me up!
Seeya round,
Derek Melton

Bruce, way to go! Thanks for the pics and the inspiration. Looking forward to hearing more about the symposium.

AWESOME!!!! Congrats on your achievement! And the extra hard test probably gives you mucho confidence in your blades and your abilities.

Way to go Bruce!

Thanks for the pictures.

Pretest nervousness can be the worst...especially if it is a test where something has to be demonstrated.

Glad you did good!

Congrats Bruce YEEEEEEEEEEE HAAAAAAAAW!

By the way I love your form in the first two pics ;) :D

Thanks everybody,It was fun...
Yes Silent I got to watch Don Fogg making Damascus, and also got to see them making steel from rocks,I missed a little of the first part due to having my knives looked at by some MS's.But it was great the rest that I did see.Got to watch part of how Larry Harley ages his Hawks, and also how Ron Newton tig welds his sheaths.Watched how Bill Herndon makes his bodies for his throat and tipped sheaths,He also showed a wood working tool that will help center line a forged blade.I will be making one in the next couple of days and will post pictures of it as I feel this will be a great benifit to anyone that is forging tapers and has trouble getting there centers before grinding..
There was so much going on at times it sems that you just get lost.Trying to remember everything you learned over the weekend is hard..
Bruce

He!! Bruce. You were the only one worried. We all knew you'd fly through it. Congratulations !:)
I missed three times not cutting all the way through, then said awe heck and cut it clean
I'll bet that's what you said!:D :D

Good on ya, Buddy :D
Peter was right, you were the only one that was worried, we knew you'd come out on top!
Thanx for the pix!
Hope you gave out lots of business cards ;)

What a blade! Wow!

So I just built my first little forge thinking I might be able to harden and temper a simple little blade. So now I gotta make it so it can be bent in half too! All I wanted when I got interested in this stuff was just to be able to skin a deer.
