Pics - Spyderco Calipso Jr. ZDP-189

I thought the Spyderco was going to be SOLID ZDP. Those photos look like it's a laminate.

Yes, the Caly Jr is zdp189 core sammiched between 420J2. I'm just about done accessorizing mine, I'll try to get some pics up here soon.

I wish you could switch the pocket clip around for tip-up carry though

I felt the exact same way so I fixed mine to suit me.

Ginshun; something like this maybe? This is a very simple pocket clip flip using the original clip. It worked quite well too.

Nicely done!!

What exactly did doing that entail?

Vassili,

I remember, Sal said that ZDP-189 was hardened to HRC 64/65. His Caly had HRC 65.

My Spyderco Calypso Jr in ZDP 189 (First Spydie for this self proclaimed "Benchmade Guy") arrived at my office today, unfortunately I was elsewhere.

It gives me something to look forward to on Monday besides the usual "excitement" of going back to work.

Decided I couldn't wait until Monday, so went in this afternoon and picked it up. Too gray and overcast to golf. I've never owned a Spyder before and I am very impressed. I always thought that the Kershaws were extremely sharp out of the box.....this beats the Kershaws hands down. It is unbelievably sharp out of the box. So sharp, I'm not real comfortable that even with my Edge Pro and the 3 grades of polishing tapes I use after the stones (3,000, 5,000 and 8,000) that I'll ever be able to duplicate this edge. Now I realize what "Insanely Sharp" means.
This is also making me rethink Spyderco. It's just a marvelous knife and just the same size as my beloved BM Mini-Grip in D2 with flatter handles (a plus with me). About the same ptice as well.....now if only Sal could put the "Axis Lock" on it....hmmmm.

The color is well....fruity. I live is LA and the color puts me off using this as an edc. Kudos to Spyderco for making such a superb steel available at a good price point in a classic folder design. The lamination line is an echo of the great japanese blades. This is a knife only the cognoscenti would appreciate forget the mall ninja. Again, thanks Spyderco. I put this one in my safe..I am truly afraid to show it to friends and family as I am sure it will draw blood it is sooooo damn sharp. Black clip is cool... (wire is better). Cool gold spyder on the blade. Thanks Spyderco.

Thanx for the kind words. appreciate. Glad you like the piece.

Sorry if the color and clip is not perfect for all. The goal was to provide a functional piece of Hitachi's ZDP to the steel junkies at an affordable price.

You most certainly attained your goals.

I can't wait to show it to the "Spydie" guys at the office on Monday and tell them that I may have joined their camp.

Great Knife.

I did some thread testing. I modified my gadget and use precise scales:

This is out of the box sharpness. This is exteremely good! I thought I will test it with other knife I bought recently side by side. But it has reading 100 point more - 170 etc... I have to sharpen it now to run fair test. However this is already test results.

Thanks, Vassili.

I saw this thread last Friday and ordered one from New Graham over the weekend. I got an email from mary Beth that it had shipped yesterday. Now I wait.
