I figured I would start a new 122/124 thread in light of the recent interest. Here are 2 hard to find versions.
The first is the 122 prototype. I use that term loosely as I have only seen the one. Maybe Buck made more but I cant imagine it would have been more than 50.

The second is another that I have only seen one of. It is a 2 line Frontiersman that is stamped 124 on the guard. I dont know if we made lots like this or not but it would seem that maybe it was done at the time when Buck was first adding model number to stamps. Maybe they had a bunch of these already finished so they decided to stamp the guard since it is not hardened steel like the blade. Who knows?

I have more pictures of these but for some reason I cant seem to post clickable thumbnails anymore. When did that happen?

I'll take 'em....:D:D

I'm still lookin' for a few and these are on the list.

Joe if using photobucket ...scroll down the page after generating images
and you should see thumbnails for messeage boards....click on that line.
I like the big pics myself.

FYI : also there were some customs made in the custom shop...
these were by employees and some times for them selves and some times for an order...
most but not all orders were likely to be stamped as custom ...
most but not all personal bult were likely to have jest the production stamp..
some were bult by Frank Buck - Chucks Bucks brother...some by Brian "MAC" Mchinny
both of these guys liked big hunking now that is a knife type knife!
neather of these folks are with us any longer and are sadly missed
sadly most of the work by these two is not marked as by them and has to be idenifted by thoes whom knew the work they did... much may never be recovered or ID as thiers.

some were bult by Bill Cody... yup WBC ...
and some were made by
buckcustomknifesmith his self ,,,,
((((bowed heads and drum roll please))))...
tada....
Master Leroy..
and lets not forget Joe whom has a supper secrettet stress relife program
were he takes out his busness fustrations deep inside the
magical mistery shop...
:D

yea i like the big picts my self!
now have ing said that i was at bucksways house and he has dile up...
talk of a long time loading a pict!!
many times it will not load as it takes so long and he got kicked off line!
you can not read the rest of a thread while the pict is loading ...
if it is loading in a new window then you can read the writtens folks wrote... ;)

Thanks E cubed. I took a look the first time but must have missed it. Inever had an issue with thumbnails before.
By the way, you might not want the guard stamped 124 when you see the rest of it!
The proto is actually in BETTER shape now. It came in as a warranty issue and the guy had practically encased the handle in epoxy because it had a small crack. I dont have a picture of it cleaned up but it did clean up right nice!

Ok that option is not listed anymore on photobucket. They give you 4 options and one even says for forums but when I checked the preview, it is the HUGE picture.
So here is the rest of the one stamped 124 on the guard. Sorry about the long wait Dave! :)

Its been one of those days ALL week!.....:barf:
So since I cant seem to post pictures anymore, try to picture this...A cool looking Frontiersman with 124 stamped on the guard, grey colored micarta handle, and only half a blade. Snapped right off, just past the serrations.

Joe, let me see if I can help.......

Deleted the photo cause 334dave has it on next post......

Joe that 124 looks like it must have been sent to you by our "MESSY" Buck brother. He must have been chopping frozen wood again!!! LOL

jb,
I believe the correct term is "batoning"?:D

Thanks Dave, I was hoping it was not just me. I searched for days for the thumbnail option.

I don't have pictures but there are a couple of more hard to find 124s. The first is a circa 1994 to 1996 version with the red birch handle but no tang stamp. At least 3 or 4 left the plant like that. The other is the Buck Custom version with the Damascus blade. Two were made in the Custom Shop in the 1980s and another was made from cable Damascus for Dick Wilson around 2000. I don't know if Dick still has his knife or not. I have one of the Buck Customs. The other is out there somewhere. Happy hunting!!!

Thanks Richard. You got me to thinking and I remembered my favorite hard to find 124. The one with the extra long blade stamped BUCK, CUSTOM, San Diego. I like the uniqueness of the stamp as much as I like the knife itself!

I have got to see and handle the long 124 w/Custom San Diego.
Very impressive.:D:thumbup:
The owner is using the pic in his avatar.

Dave, The OAL is 19 1/2" with a 13 13/16" blade.

The thumbnail option is on the photobucket website. If it was gone, it's there now.

Joe, Dick, anyone. I have two of these knives. Both are mint in the box. One has a musket etched on both sides and one has a musket etched on one side only. Do you have any information on them. I'm sure there are others out there, but I have not seen any. They are both stamped BUCK/U.S.A.

Hi Jerry, I have one of those with the musket on both sides of the blade on the version with the exposed tang and two piece Micarta handle. I don't know anything about the project but I suspect the etch was developed for the Daniel Boone knife. I've never seen the Daniel Boone knife but I did pass around a photo copy of the finished knife (Joe, you have one in the art work stuff I sent you). Maybe we can talk Joe into scanning the page out of the Buck art work and posting it in this thread. That knife may be the rarest 124 of all. The knife has a fully etched blade and no crows beak on the pommel. Again, happy hunting!!!

wow i wants them all!!!
heck i might would even give up a ride on Goose's Scoot 4 one!!!
but as grandmother said :
if wishes were horses then beggers would ride...
that and mom said some thing about a frog...?
