That meerschaum is a thing of beauty.

I've only toyed with pipes and cigars, but have a never used Wards' 3 1/8" jack style Pipe Knife with a spear blade and reamer.

I've noted that most smokers are either pipe-guys, or cigar-afficionados (LOL), primarily. There is little cross-over.
The times in my life I have tried a pipe, I've just ended up being frustrated.

I can light a cigar, almost always just ONCE, it remains lit until I am done the vast majority of the time.
Lots more futzing around to do with a pipe, as you know.

I get a rich bouqet of flavor from a decent cigar, and I don't think I ever came close with a pipe blend.

Anyone agree with me? Anyone enjoy both, with balance between them?

I'm mostly a pipe man, but I do enjoy a nice cigar as well now and then. But as much as I now it sounds weird, it all depends on the the place. I smoke a pipe99% pf the time, but my son-in-law JohnC does the cigar thing. When I'm in Key West, I do the cigars. We found a little cigar stand up on Duval street that sells hand roiled Domincans for a nice price, so we do do the cigars and rum runners.

Like I said, my SIL is a cigar man, but over the past few years I've been slowy converting him. I gifted him a nice Peterson and a Ben Wade free hand last year. This year I gifted him a new meerschaum that was a snow white virgin. Now my daughter tells me that John enjoys going out on the patio and smoking his pipes more than cigars these days. I guess a victory of sorts. But I'll still go the cigar route when I visit the tropics. Something about the Keys make me go cigars.

Here is the newly converted pipe smoker son-in-law enjoying a pipe in the night.

For someone who is new to pipe smoking, (I have tried it but the blend wasn't for me), what would you suggest starting with tobacco and pipe wise? I have been a cigarette smoker for to long and want to give a pipe I real attempt this time.

Pipe advice I have found true is the better it smells in the can, the worse it tastes when smoking. Most new pipe smokers try an aromatic blend (essentially "flavored"), and are turned off by it. I'd recommend a quality burley (pure or blended) to start. Tastes good, room note is similar to a campfire (which is not nearly as off-putting to the Frau as my more favored blends), and smokes pretty cool. From there, try different things and simply pay attention to what you like and don't like. Much like knives, there are pipes and blends for every taste. Just don't overdo it. 😉

Hint: It's a knife forum. Talk about knives.

Did you happen to win this on Ebay? About a year ago there was a guy who had a few of these style wards knives for sale, and since I suck at ebay (I can never remember to keep watching and have only won one auction) I PM'ed the guy asking if he'd sell one, which he said he would do. Then he proceeded to sell them all on ebay for less than I offered to buy one for. I have been looking for one ever since!

Hey Paul, how long did that Nub last you...an hour or so?

Knife content: Does that Case Barlow have snappy walk and talk?
