Pistol squirrel hunt today

I wanted to go deer hunting with a buddy today but at "O'dark thirty" this morning he called and said his daughter was sick and he was gonna have to stay home. He asked me if I minded if we went Thursday instead. I figured that since I was all packed I might as well go myself. I didn't feel like deer hunting by myself today(gone twice last week along, got one deer) so I grabbed my favorite .22 pistol and went squirrel hunting instead. I went out and shot three squirrels by 10am and sat down for lunch and got out my hand fishing kit. I caught five sunfish and a small bass that I had to throw back. I decided to do some gathering while I was out and only shot one more squirrel on the way back but I did get some great cedar branches for future bow drills and three small bags or Mullenin stalks for hand drills. I forgot to take pics of my fish but here are the squirrels I got today.

Did you make a stew ?
actually these are split and drying right now, gonna make smoked jerky out of this group. I have a ton of venison right now so and I'm making some of that into stews and chili. I usually make squirrel stew but this season I've been partial to pan frying them wrapped in bacon.

Nice shooting. You didn't take your rabbit stick? :)
No, not today, we're now in deer firearms season so I didn't want to be walking around all day potentially getting in other hunter's way. I found a nice ridge, got my range finder out and just shot them as they came by. I kept a good count of where and how far I shot them and just collected the first three all at once around 10am when I decided to stop for lunch.

Awesome work you did. I plan on taking up Squirrel/Rabbit hunting this spring or even this winter. Was wondering, what ammo you used? Looks like some clean kills with little to no meat loss. Thanks,

Heber

That is just great. There's nothing like killing your own dinner. Somehow always makes me feel a little closer to my inner neanderthal:) We had quail casserole at my place tonight from 6 quail I shot yesterday with my little CZ .410 double barrel.

I love the taste of squirrel. I don't know why, but everytime I eat them I get a feeling of self satisfaction, knowing I have killed my own dinner.

Great pics. Those Ruger .22s are hard to beat. My brother and I used to both take ours as "Plan-B" (for squirrels) a lot of the time when we went deer hunting on our Grandparent's farm. He had an old Mark-I , and I had a Mark-II and even with iron sights we bagged plenty of squirrels, several rabbits, a few quail, and one grouse over the years.

This pistol likes 36grn CCI mini-mag hollow points. Most of my other pistols prefer Eley subsonics.

All but one are head shots, the other (far right) was shot square in the chest due to him being about thirty eight yards away and I just plain missed the head. I use my range finder and dial in the elevation on the scope but this one I just missed. At least I missed low instead of over his head.

Nice setup! I used to occasionally to take a 7 1/2 barreled Ruger Single Six out for some tree rat fun!

Good deal. I have the same gun except with Bull barrel. Ill give the mini mags a try.

Damn. Did you shoot his jaw out? Looks like it. Nice shooting :)

Actually, the bullet went into the side of his head facing the ground. There is blood coming out of his mouth and ear but that's just "leakage". If I can, I try to lay the bullet holes facing down to take some of the "gross factor" out of the pics.

great day!

Days of gathering and harvesting always make me think of what John Muir said: 'In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks'....
