pistols in survival?

Assuming wilderness survival--it all depends on what you have room to carry. For years I carried an AR-7 survival rifle in my pack. It took up an extra 3 or 4 pounds but gave me a 100 yard range. If you are far enough away from a lot of large game they don't even run very far when you hit them with a .22. They start and duck out of sight and quietly lay down and go to sleep.

When I'm traveling real light I pack my S&W titanium snub nose. Even with 50 rounds of ammo it's under a pound. I routinely get rabbits out to about 50 feet. It sure beats throwing rocks.

A buddy of mine used to keep fraternities supplied with venison with a .22 magnum rifle. He worked for farmers who had permits to kill nuisance deer on their property. He took dozens of deer with one shot kills with a .22 rimfire magnum.

Where is a rimfire legal for whitetail???

Let me add my two cents. I have to say I carry a Ruger Blackhawk in .357 mag. as a "woods gun". It is simple enough and with the abiility to shoot light or heavy loads along with shot shells, it can cover just about any need. I always know the land I'm on and getting something to eat with it is never a problem. Nothing on it is standard. I have changed the rear sight and added a birdseye grip frame and Bisley hammer.
Now I will the first to say that given the choice, I would grab a rifle. But nothing beats a good handgun for short walks in the woods.
