Pix -- some very, very old khukuris.

Another theory on the palm swell is that I've noticed in some styles the grip is consentrated on the ring and little finger. In some martial arts this grip is used to hold a wrist or knife handle more securly and have more control. Also when coming down or across with a chop, you can get more "snap" by holding the handle with the thumb and index finger and letting it slap back into your grip just before contact. Try it some time while chopping on a log. With a little practice you can increase your momentum noticably. It's just a theory but with the handle narrowed at both ends both of these type grips would be easier to use.

Sometime back we made a replica of the khukuri with the metal rings top and bottom of handle. I couldn't use it as the bottom ring dug into my wrist. I didn't try using a leather glove but I suspect even with the glove prolonged use as a tool would have been impossible. Use as a weapon perhaps okay since you eldom are swinging 8 hours per day on a regular basis.
