Plane Crash

Hudson River hero is ex-Air Force fighter pilot

The pilot of Flight 1549 was Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger III, 57, of Danville, Calif., an official familiar with the accident told The Associated Press. Sullenberger is a former fighter pilot who runs a safety consulting firm in addition to flying commercial aircraft.

Sullenberger, who has flown for US Airways since 1980, flew F-4 fighter jets with the Air Force in the 1970s. He then served on a board that investigated aircraft accidents and participated later in several National Transportation Safety Board investigations.

Sullenberger had been studying the psychology of keeping airline crews functioning even in the face of crisis, said Robert Bea, a civil engineer who co-founded UC Berkeley's Center for Catastrophic Risk Management.

Bea said he could think of few pilots as well-situated to bring the plane down safely than Sullenberger.

Well if that was going to happen, I am glad it happend with him behind the stick!

This pilot is a freakin' hero. I believe this is the first time EVER that a commercial airliner has ditched in the water with zero fatalities.

It reminds me of an incident a couple years ago when a Cessna Citation overshot the runway in Atlantic City NJ and ended up in the water. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C80grd2CrTI

I was reading some of the reports and I had a big smile when one of the articles mentioned the pilot Sully being the last person to leave the plane. A deck ferry hand tossed Sully a knife to cut the tether line attached from the ferry to the plane. How cool is that:D Sully probably wasn't allowed to carry his own:mad:

My first thought when listening to this story as it was happening was "Rescue Riley, if you are there be careful!"
Seems to me he works that area.

All pilots are tought how to do it but how many could have pulled it off. My hats off to him.
