Planning a trip and need some advice.

Nj that is the one thing that I am having a hard time deciding on. I love to fly fish and the weight thing is a major plus but I also don't want to risk breaking a pole if I land a huge Northern. But I still have time to figure that dilemma out.

Well I decided that I better start getting prepared for my big trip so I went on a little kayak trip yesterday. I grabbed one of my buddies that is going with me and off we went. I figured 6 miles would be a nice starter. Well in the past a 6 mile trip would take around two hours. I am not in any kind of hurry. This trip however was on a near by creek that had very high water and a fast current. It took just over four hours. There were three portages and well over 60 log crossings. I managed to only flip the kayak twice. One of those times being a little on the scary side (Creek was about 50ft wide and I was in the middle not able to touch bottom.). I am scraped up, bruised and sore but made it out. To me that is a good trip. I can't wait to go back out. I learned a lot on this trip.

ENO hammock system....i use a double nest with rainfly and bug screen all eno brand and I love them used it for years. It keeps me off the ground if they get wet they dry super quick......check them out nice vear i keep 1 complete set up in my jeep and another in the house....oh rainfly works great I got the largest 1 they had and never gotten wet..and you don't gotta worry about even ground or rocks...ect.......i love them

It sounds like you had a blast, Josh! It's always nice to get out and enjoy the scenery

Sounds like you had fun Josh. Can't wait to read your stories and perhaps even see some pics from the big trip when you do it. It's going to be awesome!

I am working a couple of hours South of where you will be going... but, the weather conditions should be about the same.

Notes:
- The blackflies and mosquitos have been really bad this year... Bring DEET for sure... Dusk will be the time you will need it... Bug hat if you have one.
- Nights have been cool, getting down to the 40's... Day-Times mid 80's
- Oh, and it has been super humid

Some Gear to Consider:
- Homemade Fire Tinder to start damp campfires

- Fire Steel
- Head-Lamp with extra batteries
- Good Fixed Blade Knife
- Pocket Sharpening Stone
- Dry Bag with rope to hoist your food into a tree at nights (tooth paste and deodorant goes in this as well)
- Bear Bell is not a bad idea
- Bear Spray
- Quick Dry Towel
- Sleeping Bag / Pad
- None Cotton based clothes for when in the water / hiking
- Hiking boots with good ankle support
- GPS with spare batteries
- Water filtration system or Tablets

Thanks for the info Jay. I am hoping the black flies are gone by the time I get there.

Awesome tips, Jay714! That will definitely help Josh out

Make sure you take that bottle of Maple Crown with you and then just leave it there. Maybe it tastes better in Canada, it couldn't be worse.

Garth

Don't worry Garth. I will make sure to pick up some more Crown while I am there.

Be sure to drop it on a rock after you pick it up. I guess you could use it for bear spray. They eat dead rotting animals and even they wont go near that stuff.

Garth

LMAO I side with Garth on this one. Nasty stuff that maple crown, should be called IHOP cough syrup, heck crown in general isn't very good.
You might look for some of Tyrconnell Irish Whiskey, (I just found this stuff and it is very smooth) or Macallan for a little more bite, since you are driving and can hit the duty free store both directions. You should be able to find some Kokanee beer like I brought to Blade last year too to bring back to the shop! ;)
You ought to be able borrow some goodies to field test for the shop and write it off as a business expense.

Thanks for the info Jay. I am hoping the black flies are gone by the time I get there.

I was in the bush for about 7 hrs today... Most of the black flies have cleared up... But, the horse flies and mosquites are out...

Backwoods Off was keeping them off of me... but they were indeed swarming around my head (forgot my hat today).

Either-way, you will have a blast! Share some pictures when you get back!

- Jay

There will def be pics. AZTim, I always make sure I stop by the duty free shop. I have a list of things I am supposed to pick up. :p

Went out in the Kayak yesterday. Spent around 5 hours out on Lake Erie. I love the reactions of people when they cruise by me. I guess seeing a kayak a few miles off shore is uncommon.:p The trip went really well until a storm brewed up. The look on peoples faces as we pulled up to the docks was priceless. Two guys in kayaks stayed out longer then the people with 30 and 40ft boats. LOL

Booze, Smokes and Maple Syrup? ;)

Booze and smokes in Canada and near the Canadian border are stupid expensive, those are the first things I beeline for when I visit you guys in the south. As for maple syrup, you can have all of it that you want, in my opinion that stuff is nasty :barf:

Last time I was there i think a pack of smokes was 12 dollars. I decided that would be a good week to try quitting. ;)
