Been waiting to admit this until I was sure about it. I have been doing some plate quenching on small but beveled high alloy blades. I am impressed to the extent that now I have become a believer. I am not yet ready to stand upon a soap box and glorify it but I do intend to aquire longer plates for larger high alloy blades.

never heard of it, Roger....but I'm definitely behind the times...can you explain?

I switched too after RJ Martin pushed it so hard. After a couple of times, I feel much better about it than air quenching.

Dan, to plate quench get a couple large flat pieces of aluminum and put the blade from the furnace, still in the envelope between the plates and press. The aluminum sucks the heat out faster than forced air quench. The concern many have is that the edge is not in contact with the plate. The plate will draw out the heat from the edge fast enough. Plate size is what ever you can find at the local scrap yard. I have three or four in approximate size of 1"x14"x4" . At least one guy shoots compressed air between the plates as he presses and it makes sense.

Dan, sorry, I should of said that earlier.
I use 2 - 12x12x1" aluiminum plates and 4 squeeze type woodworking clamps. I grind after heat treat and don't have to worry about the grind area, but like Tracy said, it sucks the heat out fast.
I highly recommend it for the CPM steels.

Roger , I remember your difficulties with it in the past and there was always some question of a problem of plate quench or just a problem of technique. Large plates and a quick and easy method of securing the plates are important and an air blast for optimum results. Ypu don't have to jump up and down on it like RJ Martin does [ see his comments on knifenetwork]

Tracy I do the compressed air gig. Last week I was working on some pieces for tooling so I tried it without the air. Worked the same.

The aluminum must suck heat fast enough thru the whole blade for air cooled steel. Even tho the edge isn't in contact the knives seem to perform just fine.

BTW I only lean on the top plate. Hmmmm should I be clamping?

Steve

Steve , the cooling must be uniform, the same on both sides of the blade, no gapes between blade and foil or foil and plate. Clamp it !

COOL :D roger I use aluminum bar stock now, 1" x 2" by like 2'
I had about 13' of it :D
and I use a lever press to hold it together I like the air in the can but this keeps any warping down to a min and you can still use air on the edge. ;)

Dan: The way I hear it is that you decided to cross over a long time ago when you where in the Navy. They didn't call you Little Anchor Clacker for nothing. :p :D

The black ones, or the red ones? I saw IG one night when he was riding his scooter. He was wearing one red one and one black one. He said he was making a fashion statement. Roger, what size plates do you have right now? You need longer plates, yes? About what size?

Listen !!! I never told anyone how you put the Pantyhose over your head and then applied the war paint. PS: That was used pantyhose. :barf:

well the last time that happened
he must have split the croch out of them and got dressed in the dark and mixed them up again
was it the red one on the right leg again or the way around this time john ??? :D

I got to get out of here I can't take this any longer hahaha :D

Yes, the red one was on the right leg, Dan. I guess he got tired of the green ones, too. I recoginized him that night he was wearing the purple ones over his head. You should have seen that cop laugh while he had IG pulled over for doing 15 in a 65 zone!

John, never use the green ones over your head it will make you look purple. Doesn't red and green make purple???? HEHEHE!!!

Roger and Kit:

Is it safe to assume that all air-quenching steels, as well as the stainless steels can be effectively quenched using the plate technique?

Amazing. Plate quench evolves into cross dressing. You guys are crazy. Personally I prefer the shears.
