Playing with Knives....... The Tire Cut Videos :D

Thanks for the kind words :)

Now if I could only crank them out as fast as you can, I'll be on to something :D

Sometimes I am slow, other times I can be quicker, depends on what I am doing. :)

S90V is awesome.

Can someone explain to me something? Is the S90V the same as CPM440V? Since they changed the names I have been confused.

Thanks!

As another poster said, the name of CPM 440v was changed to S60v. This was done to avoid product naming issues. Originally there was CPM 440v, then came CPM 420V which was far superior, but everyone saw the 420 and assumed it was worse, or even went so far as to associate it with common 420 alloy steels. To seperate the CPM family of steels from far different alloys, and to make the names follow the performance levels, 440v became s60V, and 420v is now known as S90v.

440v/s60v tended to have brittleness issues that were difficult to work out in a production environment, and 420v was very hard on the abrasives used in production, so S30v was developed as a grinder friendly steel with excellent performance, though it's wear resistance is far below s90v. Spyderco (as well as a few other makers) had to run their S60v at very low hardness(56-57rc) to work around the brittleness problems, so the s30v knives generally hold a better edge. S90v for whatever reason is still relatively tough despite having better edge holding than s30/s60v. Newer abrasives make it less of a headache on the production level, which is probably why we're starting to see more of it used. There's also S125V, very new, very almost impossible to grind even with modern ceramic abrasives, don't expect to see it on a regular basis anytime soon.

So it goes like this:

s30v< (cpm440v, s60v) < (cpm420v, s90v) < s125v

So-Lo !

You are now my favorite non scientific tire cutting you-tube knife steel tester .

1234,,,,:D:):D

Glad I came across this thread, it's very helpful to see so many blades compared using the same test.

The millie was always going to be a good slicer and I really like how the Sebenza and Umnum handled themselves. There is a lot to be said for geometry verse straight out brawn.

Great videos, thanks for doing them So-Lo
