Please be on the lookout for fake USPS money orders.

I just received the following email from the local Postmaster:

"Johnathan, I talked to the Postal Inspector on this issue and it seems the money orders are good. Sorry to have put you thru this but we have to make sure we are not accepting fake money order. I have return the money orders to Texas and the Postmaster informed me new money order will be cut and mail back to you. If you need any information from me please feel free to give me a call."

They seriously owe Mark an apology plus interest for tying up his money for so long.

This will never happen, but I can dream!

It's kind of sad that the PO can't even identify a genuine MO.

The "Post Office" can.

The smart individuals at the post office can.

It's that individual who was too stupid, or lazy to verify it properly.

If I ever went back to that PO, I'd either refuse to deal with that person, or question and require verification on absolutely everything they said or did.

Well I have been busy the last week or so and somehow missed this thread, when I began to read it I was wizzed of that now I had to worry about USPS MO, as I always thought them to be the safest out there! Then I looked at the bottom of the page and realized that there were already 4 parts to this thread. So thinking I was going to jump over some of the BS I went to the fourth page. Suddenly I am lost as this seems to be saying that the MO were legitimate. So now I go back and read the entire thread.

Now I am really wizzed off. How the haties the does a mistake like this happen not only with the first employee but with the head guy!

You know it goes back to what I always say about the paper work side of the medical field, (this includes everyone that handles the medical charts, x-rays, insurance, etc. etc.) As you may or may not know both myself and my wife have a lot of medical issues and we are constantly getting screwed up bills and such!

Anyway is there anyone in this world anymore that knows how to do their J O B? I mean dern take some pride and know what you are doing and if you are in doubt ask someone. In this case the someone needed to ask someone!

Glad to see this resolved but in case you can't see me I am still sitting here shaking my head as too how the haties they made the mistake in the first place!!!!!!!!!

That is completely what I expected....and the response from the PO was the one I expected ,too. ........."We are doing such a good job we screwed things up. Pat us on the back!"

Someone should email this thread link to the Postmaster General and ask him why this happens.

Contacting the Postmaster General is actually a great idea. On my "to do" list.

If nothing else, perhaps they can can send the local PO some training documentation that clearly explains how to verify a MO.

Not much of an option here unforunately; the same 4 - 5 people rotate between working the counter at the two local post offices.

The best thing you can do, should this happen again, is to have them look them up on the computer while you wait.
That is what they're supposed to do. They shouldnt need to send them anywhere or issue new ones.

If you make them do this enough times at the office you use, sooner or later someone will get the bright idea to properly train their employees and solve the problem.

This is what I was getting at.

Make it such a PITA to shortcut, that it's just easier to do it properly.

It is my firm conviction that the Post Office and the DMV are concrete proof of reincarnation.

Those souls are being punished for committing suicide in a prior life. They have to work at mindless government jobs as penance.

=======================
Once I received a lizard from the local post office. The nice blonde Asian women (no kidding) handed me the box and even commented on how there was a lizard inside so I should be careful. I took it home opened the box and found it was the incorrect specimen. I had purchased a female, this was male. Honest mistake on the seller's part two boxes got switched. I fed the animal, gave it a drink and the next morning returned to the post office for shipment to the correct receiver (she was shipping mine to me as well).

The blonde Asian women said to me "ohh... you can't mail a lizard".

In response I said, "yes... of course you can. Check the regulation #526 and furthermore this is the exact same box and lizard you handed me yesterday. You are certainly aware it was mailed to me".

She said that if I didn't leave now I "would be turned in to postal police for investigation."

I said "OK, surely that starts with a discussion with the postmaster. Let's bring him up to speed on this".

Needless to say... the postmaster was surprised when he read the regulation that denies the mailing of turtles, turtle eggs and snakes but allows, scorpions, bees, baby caimans and alligators, and lizards (as well as a host of other species). Needless to say, the lizard went!

Great news to hear our forum colleague is in the clear and will get his money or his blades!

OK, here's the latest update:

The original money orders arrived at the PO in TX today. New MO's were issued and mailed for overnight delivery (coutesy of USPS) to NC. According to the PO, Johnathan should finally get his new MO's by 1500 tomorrow (Thursday 6/7).

I'm sorry for all the issues invloved Johnathan, but appreciate your patience and understanding!

Also, Thanks to everyone else here!

Now, go and check out the knives in question in Johnathan's forum. They are the XL Rhino trio. With all this negativity surrounding this debacle, I thought we should all remember why we are here in the first place....to enjoy all these talented makers, amazing knives and each other. Much respect goes out to all you makers, I'm envious of your talent.

I'm glad this is getting resolved. This has turned into a very positive thread - we've learned what to watch out for, and learned that both parties involved are classy guys.

No problem Mark. As I said earlier, my main priority was making sure that you didn't lose your money and ensuring that you knew what was going on with the situation.

When this happened, I immediately thought "I hope Mark doesn't think I'm trying to scam him!". That's why I decided to start this thread; transparency.

The thread has turned out to be quite informative. Perhaps this will help someone else avoid similar problems in the future. Always keep your receipts! If Mark had not kept his receipts, who knows what would have happened.

If you ever come to NC, stop by the shop and we will make a knife together!

Thanks Johnathan! I honestly never thought you were trying to scam me, like I said on the phone, random things happen to me (as well as most everyone). I was confident that it would all work out, I just felt bad that you had to wait so long for payment.

As for making a knife together, thank you for the gracious offer! That would be outstanding. I'm going to try and plan a little trip in the future to make this happen. I've been wanting to learn how to make a knife for a long time, so hanging out with you would be awesome. Ooohh, if I do maybe we can play with some Class 3 stuff too :) I know you like guns.

Just an update for those following this thread:

I received the new MO last Friday, and the PO had no problems cashing it this time! ;) They must have taken some flack over this issue, as they knew exactly who I was when I presented the money orders.

The gentleman I spoke with (not the Postmaster I spoke with originally) was very apologetic, and stated that the PO should have been able to tell that the MO was genuine. He also said that the clerk could have verified their authenticity by the serial number.

Mark received his knives yesterday, safe and sound. Everything worked out; it just took a little longer than usual!

Fake USPS money orders are out there, but so are poorly trained postal employees!

It appears that you may be more likely to encounter the latter.

Thanks. I guess you saw that thread for the little while it was up. I handled it the best I could, but I hate being put into a position of having to "handle a situation". And that's the trouble with doing business over the interwez, there is no face to face meeting where you can feel somebody out. I have to believe if we'd met before conducting business he would'a thrown up some red flags. As it is I'm not taking orders from unestablished makers anymore.

Hi Nathan, Would you please clarify that interwez comment ? Thats the nickname (wez) I've gone by since I've been 10 yr's old, and many on this forum know me as wez or wezzy

I just want folks here to know that you aren't referring to me and we've never had any bad dealing between us - ever.

In fact, I've never considered you anything but a friend.

If you would please, I'd really appreciate it ;)

:)

Not all postal workers are in incompetent! I take pride in m job and try to serve my customers the best I can. I use to work at the counter, but now I walk and deliver. I miss the days of the DRAMA at the window, but love being out away on my own. If a mistake is made I KNOW if I made it or not!
You would think the P.O. would weed out the window clerks with the "bad attitudes", but they don't.

Hey David, good to see you around.

"Interwez" was a humorous misspelling of "interwebs" meaning "the internet". Not a reference to Wes as in "Wesner". I don't think many people would connect "interwez" with "Wesner", but I apologize if you felt I was referring to you, I wasn't. We are friends.

Thank you my friend :D I thought for a moment that I did something I wasn't aware of.

Then it occurred to me you obviously weren't talking about me, but you know how this interweb can be ;) Other folks can easily get the wrong idea.
In fact, one of the reasons I regularly use smileys in my posts is to convey my true meaning. Especially posts made in jest. That type post can easily be misunderstood.

Anyway, Thanks a bunch for the clarification  And it's good to be back ;)
