Made a purchase from a seller on the forum and the box arrived like this...

I think someone was wondering if there was something valuable or not.
So please, a little bit of tape will prevent mail theft...because that happens quite often. I did bring this up with the seller. Good thing everything arrived as described, because if the package arrived with just the box, things would've gotten ugly. Also, there was no signature required for this transaction. Pretty expensive knife too. I could've scammed him easily.

So please guys/gals, put some tape on those easy to open corners where there is no adhesive. Sorry, just had to get that out

Send via registered mail if your sending expensive knives. But yea taping those boxes is idea.

When people goto the post office they don't realize they need to bring tape or buy tape there.

Either registered or just a little tape would go a long way. Don't ever take past experience and assume it will never happen to you. One day it will, and that buyer will take advantage of this.

Somebody may have tried to get in or it could be as simple as it got squashed. If the box is squashed the ends will pop open. I tape the heck out of the box, but at the least you have to tape the ends. I have received boxes that were wide open on the end.
Glad you averted a disaster

Good advice, I recently sold my 456bw on the bidding site and I should’ve made them get a signature when it was delivered....but the person had x,000s of transactions and about 100% positive but next time think I’m gonna do that, since I’m selling a few to make room for more

That's just the box being flattened by being in containers with hundreds of other parcels. I see that stuff everyday. I agree, tape is your friend.

BTW: it's true that using registered mail is the absolute most secure way to send a item, its also slow, due to security protocol. A secure and faster option is putting signature confirmation on the item, which requires a resident of the address to sign for the item, or it will have to be picked up at the post office.

When you ship USPS Priority, you are entitled to use the Priority tape for free. (at least at every post office I've ever been to) That is part of the cost that goes into shipping priority. That is just lazy/careless IMO :/

I always tape them up really good. I also always pay for insurance. It only costs a few bucks and is worth the piece of mind.

I agree that that is likely damage from shipping. I always ship the knives in their boxes and fill the shipping boxes with sufficient padding.

When I send a knife, and it is always sent priority usually in that exact box size, I tape around the entire outer edges and then a few times around the middle. If someone wants in my box, they'll need to ravage it.

Agree-makes the box harder to crush and keeps the knife from rattling around and possibly getting damaged

If you want to add one more step to help deter theft-put the knife in bubble wrap or a plastic baggie and tape that to the bottom of the box(easiest if you do it before putting box together). To get the knife out you have to destroy the box.

I guess I should've provided a picture of the top, it looked like someone stuck there finger to look inside. The rest of the box was in really good condition. I could be wrong. Still, just a little tape will deter theft

I put on way more tape than needed. I also always send Priority Mail and require a signature. I always insure the package just in case. It may cost a little more, but could prevent you from losing a lot more money.

I tape my shipping boxes excessively; even FedEx boxes that have a very good adhesive on them. I don't like to see crunched boxes like the one you received. But it could happen even with taping.

I generally don't insure my shipments. That last expensive item that I shipped would have cost me something like $70 or $80 to insure via USPS. It went UPS, but was still expensive.

I like to tape every nook and cranny. Sometimes twice, a roll of tape is way cheaper than most any knife I’ve ever sold or bought. I also don’t like any noise the knife might make during transit. I do the shake the box thing before I close it up. It gives me peace of mind that it won’t be messed with. Lastly, I’ll black out the cost of the label if it’s on the shipping label.

Think of what makes it hard/messy to open a package. Do it.

Some tape worse than other to remove?

Me, I hate "peanuts"'cause they escape and get all over the place. Something even worse that way? Actual dry beans?

A lot of good advise in this thread. But I will comment on the receiving side as well. Don't accept a box like this! Because many people (buyers) do scam by tearing up a perfectly good box and taking pictures just like this one. If the USPS does not make a note that box was damaged, and you accept it - then you are opening yourself up to an ugly confrontation that may not go your way.
