Off Topic Please don't be lazy or cheap..

A lot of good advise in this thread. But I will comment on the receiving side as well. Don't accept a box like this! Because many people (buyers) do scam by tearing up a perfectly good box and taking pictures just like this one. If the USPS does not make a note that box was damaged, and you accept it - then you are opening yourself up to an ugly confrontation that may not go your way.
Well how could I reject the package? Was not home when package was delivered.

You may have a different perspective than I do, since I only deal with forum members and not the general public, but I have never run into any that tried to scam me by ripping the box . This is not a hang out for scammers and rip off artists, though a stray may wander in from time to time. As I said I don't deal with the general public and that experience may be different.

Just a suggestion, as it would have been futile in this example. But my carrier (rural) delivered me a box that had the end tore out of it when I was not home one day - same circumstance as in everything turned out fine. But I told him not to ever just leave a badly damaged box as normally delivered. He said, "no problem, I can either leave a pickup notice or I can leave it with an exception of damaged". I asked that he leave with an exception going forward and have never had another issue. So, you might just talk the them.

I am definitely not referring to any particular client base; as I am sure there would be no problem from forum members. But the one thing I have learned is that it is NEVER the transactions that concern you upfront. It always seems to be those where everything feels legit. It doesn't take long perusing this sub-forum to figure out that not everyone is straight up; but I agree 99.9% are top notch. But, as you can image, we have seen a bit of everything... But I can tell you that the one thing you can do is make sure you are doing everything correctly; and expect, but don't rely, on integrity from all involved parties. Everything has happened, from buyers unloading boxes then claiming it was empty to sellers sending a rock and claiming they sent a knife. Naivety will subside a smidgen once a person has to eat a couple of losses. But the driving assumption should be that the other guy is as stand-up as you are.

You can only do this if it's signature required. In fact you should have the postal man wait and open the package in front of him before signing to verify what you got. If it wasn't right (like the seller had rocks in the box) you would not sign for it and tell him to send it back. Cause once you sign for it, your mostly screwed if it was a scammer.

I send several hundred of USPS flat rate boxes out every year loaded with folder parts. HD 3M packing tape and strap tape is cheap insurance. I lost one about 5 years ago and ever since I use good tape like it's free.

It's sad to see but the truth, I'm a bit OCD when it comes to packaging and the culprit in most cases is how the item(s) (knife, etc) can shift within the package, only takes a couple extra minutes to roll in some bubble wrap or inside a bubble filled envelope and cushion inside some extra paper or the saved popcorn cushion probably acquired from another member or from a retail purchase at a store or online (I always keep a box of such items on hand for this purpose). Adding some packing tape to all the seals and corners of the box also helps out. What drives me nuts is those who try to save a dollar or two and send out knives in envelopes, sometimes even unpadded ones with absolutely no cushion inside. Didn't read all the postings but hope everything was OK inside. I could show you packages where I've received packages with the knives exposed and in one case (member probably wanted to save a dollar or two to downsize the package) the blade was sticking out about an inch as it was unsheathed. When items meet/exceed a certain value its always good measure to add the insurance or as others have mentioned the signature receipt.

Thanks for this posting. I am guilty of less than great packaging, mostly just closing the Priority box and not taping it. Now I know what to do in the future.
