please help me choose a survival knife: ka-bar vs gerber LMFII Asek vs Cold Steel SRK

Out of those mentioned, I would get either the Kabar or SRK, strip the coating, and get it professionally sharpened.

i'm a 13 year old boy and have had the KABAR about a year its a tough knife and the one i would get i dug two holes with it and the finish is worn away on the tip but o well i've thrown it into trees and bent the guards back double then rebent them back it is tough

That explains a lot.And that is sad. Perhaps you would consider using proper puncuation, and capitization. It would make for sentences that were actually readable!![/B]

What we have here is a fine example of the pot calling the kettle black!

Texasboy,

I am sorry your post was met by such cruelty, especially by someone whose grammar leaves a lot to be desired. Enjoy your hobby and remember to use your tools safely.

TKC,

It is best not to begin sentences with the word "and." Remember to properly space between sentences. Your use of a comma, between the words "punctuation" and "and," was unnecessary.

The ASEK does have a sharp edged end for breaking glass, that is right. but on the other hand if you for any reason you have to hammer the edge into something, the thing you hammer with will be destroyed because of the sharp end. So in that case we are both right.

This is a true statement. You both are right. I have an Gerber LMF and 2 Falknivens (an F1 and an S1).

The Gerber does have a flat for pounding nails while holding the knife with a sheath on and it has a point for plexiglass breakage. But I think nodh is talking about striking the end of the LMF with a baton to drive the knife into wood to split it. In this case the Falknivens have a flat pommel that will facilitate this. The LMF has a point that will chew up the baton. I would just hit the top of the LMF in that case...

The Gerber is a great for a soldier, the Falkniven is great for an outdoorsman...

But nodh, if you make fun of Extrema Ratio blades you will lose my support...

I second that. Whats with that guy (TKC)?! IMO either he is on drugs or needs drugs. Where's Chris Hansen when you need him. . . .The kid is 13. . .!

I have had a K-bar Marine Corps knife for eighteen years now. It has seen a lot of abuse. The original black parkerized coating has long worn off, but I have used gun blue(cold) to coat it, and it works fine. It sharpens easy, and it has a three inch edge on the top ,that I keep razor sharp. The main cutting edge has an apple seeded edge for heavy duty cutting, and chopping. It paid for itself several years ago.
