I’m going to try to limit myself to one nice knife in 2022 (we’ll see!). I’ve got it narrowed down to a couple of brands I’d really like to try out. Given a budget up to $700-800 or so would you choose a Shiro or a Koenig? If one or the other, why? Which specific models are your favorite? Should I try for used or wait for a drop of something new? I’ve had experiences with a good number of the big mid tech brands, but no experience with these yet. My tastes are all over the place, love modern super steel tacticool flippers just as much as carbon steel traditionals, and everything in between. Excited for some input on this, thanks!

Shiro would be my choice even never had any of those. I’m not sure that $800 will be enough for a good model, but from what I had chance to fiddle with, Shiro would be a better knife IMO.

One knife in 2022? And you are going to buy it in Jan and go ... 11 months without buying another one? Good luck with that hehe. :D

Well, since you are definitely out of my personal price range, I can only go on what I've read here and what I've seen at shows. Shiro would by my first choice too but you might not find one in your price range. I admit to not knowing much about Keonig.

Have you looked at Olamic? A Wayfarer 247 has a ton of options and even comes in under your budget.

I don't have either (also on my list), but.... I think the Shiro's are better looking. They're probably equally well made. I like that the Koenig's have multiple means of deployment. Shiros AFAIK, are flipper only, which I don't love.

I’ve never held or seen either in person only online.

I like the Shiro Neon Zero in plain titanium.
I hope I would like the plain Koenig Arius but it could easily be “too over the top” for my taste once I saw/held it.

Seems to be a pattern emerging :) Was a tossup initially but I’m definitely leaning toward Shiro…

There's far worse ways to lean...
Now the fun of the hunt, I see there’s a wood inlay model in stock at a few places in my budget, but think I’d rather stalk the forums and try to pick up something a little higher end used if possible. Would love input on that wood inlay model if anyone has it? No rush, since I hope to limit myself this year I can take my time!

Sounds like you’ve made your choice, but my choice would also be Shiro. They weren’t really an interest until recently for me, but after getting a Neon NL I can see what the fuss is about. It’s an awesome, well made, smooth as glass knife, with a super slicy full flat grind. One of my favorites currently. With Koenig I still can’t understand what the hype is about. Nothing about the Arius is attractive to me, but it’s pretty popular, so I’m sure it’s great quality too.

Another suggestion I’d throw out is trying to snag an Oz Roosevelt in one of their lotteries. Probably my all time favorite knife.

Shirogorovs always look good to me eye.

I’ll check out the Oz, that’s a new one to me, appreciate it!
