Common sense and knowledge is your best bet. Learn as much as you can about the specific knives that interest you, learn about the makers, the design, the materials used, the locations where they are made. That is what will assist you from separating the garbage from the quality. If you do not like "Chinese" knives, simply do not buy them. Keep in mind that you must pay for quality in higher end knives. If all you are intested are blades that come in under $50, you don't have much to worry about as far as being fooled by a fake.
