Please tell me: What is the point of a Sodbuster?

That's a great knife story, willgoy. Thanks for sharing it.

By the way, where in Europe are you? Just curious if it is some place I've been or might like to see one day.

The Sodbuster can do almost anything well and it's a good value to boot. It's sorta like the stripped down F150 of the traditional knife world.

If there was a Knife "Hall of Fame", the sodbuster would be voted in on, the first ballot

That's a good bet! If you take in the hundreds of years of the folding butcher pattern in Germany and eastern Europe, it's probably one of the few knives that would be instantly recognized by a 1700's peasant worker. As far as folding patterns go, I think only the Navaja, and a few Italian folders would have that recognition. Maybe I'm missing a pattern or two.

Carl.

Case has introduced a new version of their "Sod Buster" Jr. for June 2012 delivery with Carbon Fiber covers.

One dealer has them for a 74.99 dollar bill. Yikes!!!!!!!

And the prize for best answer goes to festerfromnzed!

And now I'm hungry again! Which reminds me, a couple of my Scouts owe me some venison since before the holidays...

Before I bought one I wasn't quite sure of the attraction either. I had an Opinel #8, an inexpensive, no-nonsense working knife, and one of the other leaders in my Troop said it reminded him of his Sodbuster. So I went looking online, bought a Case "yeller", and now it gets dropped in my left front pocket fairly often when I know I need a working knife.

I like GEC's name for it, 'bull nose work knife', sorta sums it up right there...and I can't wait to get mine!

I see the Sodbuster as the jack of all trades working mans knife that is just a simple utilitarian design made for nearly every job under the sun also I've found the ergonomics of this style of knife to be exceptional for prolonged useage. While it isn't ideal for any particular task it can do a multitude of them pretty well.

Hello Ken,

I like your avatar knife. What handle material and who made it for you? Do you have bigger pics?

Thanks,
Nathan

I am a sheet metal worker I carry my G.E.C. Bullnose in my left pocket for all the dirty chores. My G.E.C. #53 stockman in my right pocket for everything else. Work knife and pocket knife. Sometimes the bullnose goes in the watch pocket for easy access. Like that I pinch the blade open with one hand.

I get why other people like them ... simple, hard-working, not highfalutin. But its not a platform high on my wish list at all. I guess I like highfalutin knives, mostly.
