Pocket Brick - Friend or foe?

Its not about the weight. As others have said, mathematically and physically, the weight is negligible. I think for me at this time, its because of the types of pants (shorts) I usually wear. In jeans, I don't notice the ~3.5oz Kershaw at all. I don't usually wear jeans, or heavy pants like that though. I wear cargo-ish shorts made out of almost an athletic short fabric, and in those, the extra weight makes them stretch differently.
.

this is a good point - I wear jeans most of the time and size weight is never an issue.
when i do wear shorts, its generally around the house, grilling, yardwork, relaxing - and it seems that everythign I add to my pocket starts to pull on them. not just my knife, wallet, car keys, lighter all pull at them

Friend. But It's the pants, and the belt that make it so. I wear jeans plus a wide nylon weave belt and a 10oz folder rear pocket with my wallet and a bandana to stabilize the knife is no trouble except when driving long distances. I frequently tap on the outside of my pocket to make sure it's there. It's a CRKT Harsey in case anyone wants to know.

I use my knives only for light cutting tasks, mostly slicing.
So I dislike blades that are too thick or have thick edge.
I probably don't mid the weight, but these knives tend to be bricky.

My light weight slicers.

What's the bottom knife?

Side bar: Ever tried powerlifting? I bet you could throw some serious numbers up in no time. Plus, you’ll maintain more muscle while losing weight.

Not really. My first concern is dropping fat. 240-250 is a good range for my size and build.

I should add that I tend to carry my knife now on the left side and phone on the right to help "balance" things out.

I like many heavy knives enough that I keep buying them but I know from experience that I won't often carry them. For some types of clothing they just don't work (e.g. workout shorts, dress pants, etc.) and even when I'm wearing jeans or cargo shorts I'm usually looking to lighten everything else (light wallet, light knife, light keys) to make room for whatever firearm I'm carrying.

It's a lot to ask of a belt to hold up a pair of pants and also a fat wallet, a folding boat anchor, a pile of keys, a loaded firearm and sometimes a spare magazine . . .

Honestly I think many people are noticing that bulky folders weigh alot and that is why they say, “I would only want to carry a knife that weighs less than X.”

But I think dfinitely the bigger nuissance as many others have noted is actually the bulkiness of the knife. I doubt too many people are struggling to carry a half a pound in their pocket.

I’ll say it again that it seems a bulky folder bothers me most when I’m sitting in an easy chair where the arms seem to sort of push the knife into my leg.

I have no trouble carrying a heavey knife but in the same respect if a lighter knife will do the same things the heavier one will why carry/buy the heavier one?

I also said that not everyone is super picky about knives,I used to carry with me a Gerber Multi-Plier
but that only lasted a day because I didn't like the feeling of it bouncing around in my pocket whenever
I ran.You ran with a knife 3 ounces lighter than a Bk2?! , those encumbering 11 extra ounces
may be the source of your back pain.I guess that is why you wore it at a gym
. :D:p

You just shift it to the other pocket to balance things out when one side hurts too much. :D

It was a very, very short run, as my back does not allow running at all most days.
Every so often I chance it at the gym when things seem viable, just to see what my stupid back can handle.
But I no longer try to catch the bus by running; last time I tried that, I had a big muscle spasm, almost fell, and I missed the damn bus anyway!!!

Dang hard to be a super anti-hero with back spasms ! Worse than Kryptonite . ;)

Makes things more interesting. ;)
And convenient...don't have to wait for villains when your own body can decide to beat you up. :D
Builds "character" and provides justification to carry around a honking big stick . :p

True enough.
Although the moment I started carrying a walking stick, girls flirting with me came to a sudden and complete end.
Instead, now oftentimes pretty girls hold the door open for me and say "After you sir."

Ouch.
However, I’m hitting that demographic too (complete with the limp).
How did this happen!o_O

I just weighed a Real Steel Sea Eagle and it weighs
121 grams =
4.268 ounces
Jill,
Just wanted to say thanks for alerting me to my erroneous data.
Yes, my Sea Eagle also weighed in at 4.3 oz. I have absolutely NO idea where I got the 6.4 oz. listing.
Typo - very possible;
Senior Moment - not going to rule it out;
Generally confused - Almost certainly. At least when I referred to "weighing it with the sheath".

I mixed up the Sea Eagle with a SOG "Team Leader" fixed blade that looks very similar in the photos of my DB. Once again, I try to think and nothing happens!

At least I fixed my data, thanks to you! What I do know - hopefully, I bought the Sea Eagle knife last Sept. for $58 from Knife Country USA. (who I don't shop anymore due to a unrelated bad Customer service experience) I am not saying they had it wrong in their listing because their current listings don't give any weight specs. At least not on my spot checks. So I have no explanation for the 6.4 oz claim. I throw myself on the mercy of the court. lol

I will note, because of the evil pixie side of me, that this is what Knife Country currently list as specs for a Real Steel Sea Eagle.

  • Made in China.
  • 4 3/4" Closed Linerlock
  • Victorinox Tinker Boy Scout Red
  • Large blade, small blade, Phillips screwdriver, can opener
  • Red handle has Boy Scout logo
They got the first one right - China - at least. Boy Scout logo??? WTH?

While we are on the subject, How do you like your sea eagle? I got it and have never carried it. Like the look, the deployment is a bit off. Takes a strong flip to get the blade out and locked. Doesn't work anywhere close to 100% of the time. Right now I am just working it a bit to see if it will loosen up on it's own. Then I may need to disassemble and tinker with it. Like the look, though I am not a big knife guy so it probably will never see much pocket time.

I've tried to offer up the spreadsheet I use to track my knives on BF and see what others are using. Mine works pretty well, provided I put in the right data. Unfortunately, BF doesn't allow that file format to be uploaded so I can't pull it off with the current gear. Will have to work out a different way and a new thread when I get that all together. Probably go to Drop Box.

Happy 4th to everyone!

I think the Sea Eagle is pretty bad. Soft detent, blade falls out easy, lock up is loose. Regret buying it.
