Pocket checking strangers - pickup lines

I went to the emergency room for a minor injury.
Had to leave my knife with the security guide. When leaving there was a new guard when getting my knife. He asked what brand and I told him Benchmade. The guard told me they more expensive than he could afford but he had collected knives. He showed me what he was carrying a Kershaw.
Had a nice conversation. At one point we had both are knives open while talking. I was wondering if someone seeing this would call for the hospital police. Nope.....talked awhile than I left....

There's a clerk at a nearby gas station that always has a large fixed blade on his hip.
I'm in there occasionally early am on my way to work.

I struck up a conversation with him one morning, now he makes a point to show me what knife he's carrying.
It's usually a large PX store military knife.... But always interesting.

I'm amused at other customers reactions. Surprisingly most folks are indifferent to it.
I asked him if he ever gets hassled by the police for carrying such a large knife......

"Nah, I'm not hiding it. They usually want to see it too."

It was funny, one morning there's 4 of us all showing each other our knives at 5am, drinking coffee and eating doughnuts.....

Here in rural Florida, almost every man carries a knife (or two or three) in his pocket, although only a "common pocket knife" can legally be carried concealed without a permit and there are conflicting judicial opinions about what qualifies as a "common pocket knife".

So I usually open carry a knife, because that is legal in my county except in certain proscribed places such as schools, courthouses, and bars. I have never seen anybody else open carry a knife. Nobody except friends seems to notice when I wear a neck knife, but fairly often somebody will comment about a belt knife, especially when the handle is orange (I collect orange knives).

They don't say, "Wow, that's a cool Ruike Hornet F815 with 14C28N steel!" They might say, "Wow, that's a cool knife! What is it?" And then we have a nice conversation about knives. It usually turns out that the other guy has 20 or 50 or 100 knives, some of which were handed down from his grandpa. Everybody gets why orange handles are great.

Just a few days ago, I talked for about half an hour with a guy who was overwhelmed by the selection of about 200 knives at Ace Hardware, ranging in price from around $10 to just below $500. We discussed what kinds of knives were good for what, and a salesman joined in who was curious about different kinds of steel.

Of course, open carry is not legal everywhere. Maybe wearing a T shirt extolling your favorite brand of knives would help spark a conversation, especially if it does not a include the word "knife" or pictures of knives.

up in my corner of Canada, it's pretty rare, but I have met a few who carry an edc, but not really knuts

it's honestly just the older folk, carrying 110s etc - which is fine of course but they'll think you're weird for talking about them,
they don't tend to see it as a collectors item... only a tool, and of course rule 9
which is pretty much where I am at with it, I just like nice tools

back in my younger days I knew a young Sikh who worked at the corner store, and we had some good conversations, fairly intelligent guy
... it's funny now that I think on it, the cross section of bf members & Sikhs _should_ be fairly high, after all, they are the only religion that has carrying an edc as a tenant, it's required after baptism

kirpans are fairly interesting... personally, I'd hate to edc one and not be able to use it as a tool when I needed it for mundane things
(they are only to be used for defence, and protecting the weak / innocent)

If you try to move a conversation with a woman you just met along too quickly, she will see you as creepy. Same thing here.
If you see that he/she is feeling that, take a step back, give space, danger Will Robinson.
Not the end of the world in either case. Just stop, back up, and move on.

So last week while up in Maine, I noticed alot more people carry knives (at least that I can see). I'm a pretty sociable guy (at least, that's what the men tell me...) so I tried to strike up a conversation, maybe ask where the locals go to fondle knives.

Scenario 1: parking lot security guard, I see a distinct aftermarket spyderco clip.
Dergyll: hey man that's a cool para 3 clip you got
Security Bro: yeah man I had it anodized and put it on this para 3 20CV!
Conversation continues for about 10m until my cruise arrived. Rating: success

Scenario 2: at a picturesque spot of top of Camden hills, family of 4, dad approaches me...I noticed the distinct outline of a kershaw SS leek clip.
Dad: hey do you mind taking a picture for us?
Dergyll: no problem, anything for a knife buddy
Dad: yeah... cool, um thanks
Conversation ends. Rating: failure

I've almost never had strangers ask to see a knife (I can count the times with my hand, usually when I'm fishing)...is this a weird thing to ask? Anyway, what are your thoughts on strangers asking to see what you're carrying? Do you ever do it?

Cheers!
What I’ve realized is that most folks aren’t as into the knife hobby as I’d like to think. I think for a majority out there it’s just a tool that goes into their pocket and they’re not really exposed to the online community.

Seeing custom clips and stuff is usually a sign of a cultured knife community member, or usually when I see a higher end knife in a guys pocket for example, CRK, Hinderer, Etc. (Only seen once or twice)

In Los Angeles, I really haven’t ran into many who carry nor had conversations but if I had the opportunity and I saw something intriguing I might try to spark a conversation too

Same here in CT. I'm getting so desperate that I might just go into Costco and talk with the Cutco guys...they know alot about knives right? Right?

I've been to the ER many, many times. Never have I had a knife confiscated or anyone even ask or check.

However, 7 years ago I nearly lost my right middle finger at the third knuckle and the ER doc happened to also be a collector and was carrying a Spyderco Leafstorm.

So I was at a Pistol Match last night, and one of the other shooters pulled out a really cool knife for "Show & Tell"...
Pretty soon: I had mine out, and the match was delayed for about 20 minutes while everybody was emptying their pockets, and checking out the action of all the knives.

Interesting. Most of the time I've found people at ranges, especially employees, carry low end or garbage knives.

My cc instructor last summer swore by his cobratec. In illinois it's illegal to cc in an establishment that makes 50% or more profit on alcohol and suggested everyone buy a cobratec otf from him for when they are at the bar.

He proceeded to pull his out and of course it failed to fire. He says oh that happens after a while so I just buy a new one. Meanwhile I'm quietly sitting in the back with my Hogue Exploit, which has never failed to fire.

Things like that would never happen in CT.

In fact, nothing cool ever happens in CT.

Gun guys are gun guys... and salesmen are salesmen!

Had to get a new S.S. card a couple years ago, and as soon as I walked into the local office, the guard was like "What's that?"...he saw the clip. Told him it was a pocketknife, and I had to go put it in the car. Probably could have just unclipped it and had it in my pocket, as he didn't check when I came back in, but wasn't taking the chance. The other thing that was odd was when my number was called and I went to the little cubby to talk to someone, there was some serious bulletproof glass between us. What are they expecting to happen at an SSA office?

It might have been this...

Was returning from a morning hunt with my hunting partner and we stopped by his friends. He went to grab my Hella Eagon. Pushed his hand away and then gave him the knife. It was normal for me get some thing to eat after a Hunt. Really the only times I would open carry down in SC. Rarely any one said any thing.
