pocket clips vs. automobiles

My truck isn't three months old yet, and I tore the vinyl on the center console this afternoon because of my pocket clip. I chipped and scratched paint on my last pickup because of clips, and I'm about to switch to traditionals and saks because I pay a hell of a lot more for my auto than I do my knives. I was also looking at pocket sheaths for small fixed blades before this happened, all the more incentive.

The speed/convenience is nice, but not when it screws up my other property, or if I have to change my wardrobe to prevent this.

Er... I've never had this happen. I've carried a number of folders with pocket clips. How'd you inflict this damage?

leaning over checking my passenger side. the paint gets jacked up when I'm loading/unloading stuff, like tools, or maybe uniform items I keep in the backseat.

I feel you, put a nice scratch on the door of my Envoy from a pocket clip. As I like carrying knives that way though I just try to be more careful.

I have done similar things with my belt buckle, but not too often. I am more aware of a pocket clip than a belt buckle so it isn't too much of an issue for me. Don't change your knives unless you really want to, if you don't want to scratch you new car up, just trade it in for an old model and pocket the extra cash for knives. You won't be as afraid of scratching an old paint job.

I've put a couple scratches on the driver's door frame from a pocket clip. The car was less than a year old and really had me banging my head for being so stupid. I'm more conscious now but I have to think about it when someone squeezes me in a parking place.

I carry in my back pocket with a clip and have never had that happen; I also never lift things over the sides of my trucks.

Only with my JYD II have i scratched up my car and bad... Worst clip on the market......

I agree that clips are often convenient, but can do real damage. I've got scratched paint on my car near the driver's door, as well as cuts all over the steering wheel cover. I don't really like clips, but I oftentimes I still use them while trying to be more careful. Some clips are worse than others, too. I wish there was a better system to carry a knife without a sheath. I'm sure to repair the damage to my car would cost hundreds.

Whenever I'm washing or waxing my truck I wear an old gen1 spyderco endura with the molded FRN clip. zero chances of scratching with that.

Never had this problem, but one solution might be to carry Spydercos with the wire grip. The end of the clip is rounded and smooth.

I used to have this problem, now I carry right front pocket. Problem solved, though it does mean I don't do "wide" knives any more.

you could clip your knife onto your "watch pocket":little pocket inside front pocket

This is a problem and can also deform or break the clip aside from the auto finish and seats if you snag it right. You could clip it on the inside waistband of your pants (as mentioned by someone before me). I used to clip it behind my right hip, inside the waistband. If you tuck your shirt out while carrying inside the waistband, it might prevent the clip from scraping or snagging.

I caught my leatherman charge clip on my seatbelt while getting out of my truck and it broke the clip off.

My Kershaw Chive clip has scratched the leather steering wheel of my Audi A4 twice. My heart almost stopped both times. Since then, I generally put the knife in the center armrest with my wallet.
