pocket clips vs. automobiles

Ouch. I carry right front pocket, at the seam as well, and have inadvertently "keyed" my own car with my Mini Griptilian's clip, trying to get back into my car in a tight parking spot. Ironically, this was just before I got my Caly 3 in the mail. I think my Mini Griptilian was mad at me.

Took me 20 minutes with Meguiar's Scratch-X on a microfiber wax applicator to get that scratch out.

You could always get one of the custom makers to build some replacement clips that are either wire, or don't have a tip that protrudes very far.
I haven't torn or pulled anything inside, but then again my center console isn't upholstered. The biggest threat to my upholstry is the velcro closure on the key fob suspended from my belt; I keep leaving it open, and it takes some fabric with it every time I get out of the car that way.

I have yet to have a problem with my Spyderco wire clips.

Never had this problem, but one solution might be to carry Spydercos with the wire grip. The end of the clip is rounded and smooth.

+1

I've always heard of the automobiles winning:confused: The seat belts usually take the knife or just rip the clip off! The knives are getting some vengeance done!:p

You might try taking the clip off and dipping the end of it in that liquid rubber stuff. That might solve your problem. When ever I carry I always try have my shirt or jacket covering the clip. When I wash my truck I wear swim trunks so that means it is clipped iwb.

I carry clipped in the back pocket. Years ago I bought a new car with fabric seats, and to my chagrin the drivers seat showed ugly wear after only several months. I removed the clip and started just dropping it into the pocket. That makes for slightly slower access, but actually much faster to put away.

Now I have gone back to clipped carry, but I bought some seat covers for my vehicle to greatly reduce wear.

move it closer to the inside of your pants pocket, instead of it clipped to the edge near the seam

My truck isn't three months old yet, and I tore the vinyl on the center console this afternoon because of my pocket clip. I chipped and scratched paint on my last pickup because of clips, and I'm about to switch to traditionals and saks because I pay a hell of a lot more for my auto than I do my knives. I was also looking at pocket sheaths for small fixed blades before this happened, all the more incentive.
Sounds like a good excuse to get a Buck 110! :D

well, I carry my wallet in the same pocket, so I kinda need the space. I'm thinking of a pouch/wallet thing to carry a knife in a fixed position in the pocket.

Allen, I was wondering about when the custom shop was going to show up on the revamped site.

Hardheart: I used to have pocket clips scratch my guns :eek:when slung on my right shoulder. They are also hard on pockets, furniture, and pickup paint. My first solution was to carry only old Spydercos with plastic clips, but that was too limiting.

Now all of my users with metal clips are covered with heat shrink tubing. Problem solved:). The clear stuff comes in several sizes, will not come off (unless it's cut off intentionally), and ends snags and scratches. The clear stuff ends up a smoke gray color and doesn't look bad. It can be removed with no damage to the clip and can help in retention as well as saving pocket seams. Regards, ss.

Funny, I'm usually more concerned that my seatbelt mount will scratch up the clip on a nice knife than if the nice knife will cause any issues with the vehicle. My cell phone is usually what get's ripped off while entering/exiting the vehicle. I bought a couple cell phone holders ahead though....:)

I own a few hobby cars so I spend a lot of time detailing and maintaining them.

I learned real quick to drop a clipped knife into my pocket whenever I'm near any of my cars or just carry a slipjoint. A bulky belt sheath doesn't work for me either , it gets caught on things too especially when maneuvering around a small garage.

I've had a few instances where I hit my vehicle with a pocket clip, but nothing serious; I'm fairly conscious when near a vehicle.

I have to laugh when I remember losing a pocket knife, going crazy looking for it, then getting pissed when I couldn't find it. Fortunately, I remembered having it when I drove my pick-up; there it sat clipped to the seatbelt.

Right front pocket... Never had a problem with it scratching my truck, but I have gotten it snagged on a bow or something when moving around in the workshop or the warehouse. Snatches the knife right out of my pocket.
The Tenacious I just bought fits perfectly into my Watch-Pocket on my blue jeans... Which I will now call my Knife-Pocket.

To tell ya the truth, I haven't had this problem. I have had the problem with the seatbelt getting in the way if the knife is just too big and it sticks out of the pocket a bit. Basically, not having a low ride clip.

I always cover my pocket clip when squeezing in between cars or something because I'm always afraid of something like that.
can't you just drop the knife into your pocket?
or cover it with something rubber or anything that won't damage a car?

See post #29 :)

Hey, the heat shrink tubing is a clever idea! I have tons of it in black.

And here I thought I was the only one who always worries about the clip when I go to work on my car (leaning over fenders, etc).

Never had this stuff happen to me , could be as I am used to having a 1911 on my side ( IWB ) and am just used to it after 20 years. never had a knife or handgun scratch or tear anything.

Or perhaps it has happened and you just were not aware of it. ;)
