Pocket knife weight maximum

I've been carrying a RAT2, in D2 lately, and it's 2.6 oz (according to my postal scale). I also like my Buck 112 slim select at 2.3 oz, but it is physically a little bigger than the RAT2. Another knife I sometimes carry, that is probably less common, is my Boye folder. It comes in at 2.3 oz, but is also a little larger than the RAT2. The blade length is about the same on all of them, and that is the size I like.

So for me, lighter, thinner, and smaller, is the way to go, for a blade that is about 3" long.

When I started collecting heavy tanks were fine but I have aged and now grams equal pounds.

I far prefer a lightweight folder. No more than 5 oz is ideal. The knife that really changed things for me was the Protech Malibu, showed what you're u can do with a lightweight but very capable folder. From there my buying habits changed dramatically.

I don't mind some heft to a knife - quite the opposite - but if light is your game, vcedgeknives.com could be for you (if not your wallet). Someone posted his recent purchase of one here, and it was astounding. The #078 is simply stunning (sold out, alas).

It seems to me that I dont have a max weight, but I have a preferred weight to open length ratio.

Something around half ounce per inch is my ideal ratio. So 9” oal length should weigh around 4.5 ounces.

I carry a leatherman surge in my front right pocket and a benchmade grizzly creek clipped on same pocket. Surge is 12.5 Oz and the knife is over 4 Oz. So little more than a pound. I don't find it's noticeable with blue jeans or shorts, really nothing at all with work pants. I mean if I had like gym shorts or swim trunks on I'd probably carry something lighter.

I find dimensions more important than weight. I won’t buy anything thicker rhan a 1/2”. My heaviest folder is a xm 18 at 6+ ounces.

I'm about 6'7" and 275 lbs (on a good day..) so I don't fret over ounces too much. Not sure what my heaviest folder is tbh. I'd guess 6 or 7 ounces.

If I'm hiking (which is rare with 2 kids in college atm), I'm more careful counting ounces on gear.
I'm 7ft1 and 320lbs. Wanna fight?!

(I'm really that big but kidding about the fighting part. Hehe..)

My Rukus weighs 8 oz. I consider its heft and size a feature, not a bug. But I live in jeans.

As my ass is getting older, it’s getting saggier. Which means it takes less and less gravitational assistance to cause a bad case of plumber’s crack. Not that I ever had much in the way of hips to begin with. I realized this one day this past summer when I was carrying a Leatherman something or other on my belt as well as a medium sized folder and SAK in my pocket to do a little fix-up on my old garden trailer. It took me twice as long to finish the task at hand because I spent half the time pulling my pants back up. Long story short, the lighter the better. No more than 4 oz, 3-3.5 is better, under 3 is ideal, though not always the most practical.

Buy suspenders and go heavier! 😂

I like my knives lighter: maybe 3 1/2 ounces or so.
Having said that: Hinderers that I've carried weigh much more, and the BUCK 110 is no lightweight at 7.3 ounces!

Wow, really surprized on some of the weights of the knives you guys carry. I have a Hinderer XM-18 that gets no pocket time at all because of the weight and size. I do carry some 4+ oz knives but usually around 2.8 to 3.6 oz. As I have gotten older I use my knives less for work and more for the occasional required cutting, opening packages etc...

Talwar xl at 8.15 occasionally
Counterpoint XL at 7.9 occasionally
Benchmade turret at 5.8 most days lately. Turret took a week to get used to. Helped having used it to do some heavy cutting. It treated me better than most so I made a point to get used to it. Now it doesn't bother me.

My favorite Lionsteel/Collectorknives Barlows and Bolus range from 2.2 to 2.7 ounces, and I’ve gotten used to that. Just enough knife for me.
