pocket knife

pay no attention to JGarth. he's the resident sphincter hole around here. so do like most everyone else on the board here and ignore him.

Like another poster said, her maturity level is a lot more important than her actual age. If she can learn and abide by the proper safety rules then she is old enough to have the knife. Only you could say for sure.

A SAK is a great first knife. I got my first when I was 7 as well.

How about a Spyderco Ladybug? If you dont want it sharp you can always file it down. GOOD LUCK! Kevin:)

thanks roughedges i think she is ready i have looked at the sak line looks good now which one to get it will be on a limited basis under supervision and as for jgarth he is just pissed off at the world and needs to take it out on somebody thank you

Many of us here had our first knives at a young age. Don't be too upset when she cuts herself. It will happen eventually, it is all part of the learning curve. Heck, many adults here still cut themselves on a regular basis.

As far a JGarth, just do like many of us have and put him on ignore. We are all hoping that everyone will ignore him and he will go away.

that is the first thing im trying to teach her i know for a fact that everyone gets cut sooner or later i know i still cut self on a regular basis i have my own first aid kit thanks

I don't see why its such an issue for some of us, especially if she is a responsible kid. Like I said, I had a knife from the time I was 7. I've also carried one nearly every day of my life since I was 8 years old and never got in trouble with it in school, never tried to hurt anyone with it, etc. and only ever cut myself badly with it once. Once was more than enough.

I think that sheltering our children from things like knives plays a large part in the current widespread mentality of, "that's a weapon! don't you know that knives hurt people???" that seems so pervasive in our society today.

Early and responsible exposure to tools like knives and guns would go a long way towards helping to change this mentality, IMO.

yes roughedges right on the money but in todays way of living its a threat and thay are trying to take this way of life away from the good guys i dont want her to think that way i want her to enjoy this pastime that all of us have grown fond of

I remember seeing a video in an anthropology class one time about a South American tribe and there was this kid, couldn't have been more than 6 or 7, wielding a machete, helping to gather food. While it isn't necessary in our society for someone that young to have or use a knife, it is possible for them to learn to do so. When I was a kid not much older than that, I remember going to flea markets and yard sales and people selling me knives with no questions asked. I honestly probably should have had a bit more supervision, but I never seriously hurt myself and never threatened or hurt anyone else. Teach her right early on and remove the mystique that comes from having them forbidden to her and there is probably less chance of her getting into trouble later on if her interest continues.

yes that is what i intend to do but i think the machete might be a little big for grade school just kidding i too remember going to flea markets and buying knives with no questions but now a days you get carded and have to be at least 18 at least there is no background check yet or no special tax like gas or ciggerets

As parents we can only hope.

If serious, God help us all!

Freaking sheeple!:jerkit:
I had my first 410 shotgun when I was 7 and my Grandfather would take me out to shoot cans behind the cabin. My friends and I used knives in Cub scouts for God sake. Think supervision not put your kids in front of the Playstation baby sitter.
I started my kids out on Case sodbusters and A Buck fixed blade.

hay i like the playstation baby sitter for me not the kid lol case sodbusters ever get worried about losing it

No I bought them their own. I let them pick out what they wanted. Now however my oldest wants my Strider and a Sebe so I guess I will have to work some more over time.:D

strider i have 2 a db and a btss she will have to work very hard to get one of thoes lol but i do like the idea of letting them pick out what they want thanks

Have you considerd Gerber Nautilus?
NautilusWEB.jpg

Good grip (lil bit big for a kiddie)
Locking (IMO its important)
Lock is easier to operate than back- and linerlock (I think axis-type locks are best for kids)
Its a multitool+flashlight combo (and the light opens like an auto - thwack! its fun!)
Nice color (for girl it can be VERY important)

PS: I know where you can get one at 50% discount (about $20)

Seven years old? Are you kidding?

She should have had one when she was FIVE!

I think a SAK is the way to go.

Take care.
