What knife do you trust to hold up to hard-use jobs with a blade under 3"? The only truly hard use blade I can think of is the Strider PT, which is built like a stalwart tank. Perhaps some of the smaller Emersons could fit into the category, too.

My under 3" blades, what few I have, are all slipjoints except for the Spyderco Persistence. Though made in China, this is a tough little bastid! the steel liners are all of .065" thick and they surround a full .125" thick blade that is 2.75" in length. I would not be afraid to use it hard if I absolutely had too.:)

I have two of the big Extrema Ratio folders, the Nemesis and MPC. So when I found a good deal on their BA-1, I got it. I think it would stand up to the Strider PT.

I have a Leatherman K500X that I pulled out of my stash a few days ago. It's a very comfortable knife, and I believe it sits right at 3". It's the only knife that fits comfortably that I like under 3 1/2". It has a 154CM blade and is .125" thick. It is very stout and has a flat grind sort of similar to a hinderer spanto, but throughout the entire blade (very thick grind). Here's a few pics of it, it also has a built in slide out carabiner/bottle opener:

Enlighten me. Define "hard-use jobs".

In almost 50 years of using pocket knives, I have yet to have one "fail".
Beats me. Maybe I just haven't used them "hard".

So just what task is it that you want to perform?

I wasn't actually looking for a knife, just curious what people thought were good, solid knives. :)

Oh.
My Buck 110 is a good solid knife that has never failed me.

Busse game warden.

+ 2

with widths ranging from .14 up to .27 thickness.

basically unbreakable. If you do manage to break one (Ie hammering it into concrete and smashing it sideways, there is a lifetime guarantee for accidental breakage. That warranty transfers with the knife so it does not matter if you are the 20th owner).

some size comparison shots
