Pocket Slips: Yay or Nay?

Hello Knife Nuts,

I'm going to assume most folks don't use a pocket slip but for those that do or have tried them, I'd very much appreciate your thoughts, good or bad.

I get that they help protect the knife from scratches and lint jams. More wondering about comfort, do they help keep a knife upright, that sort of thing.

After many years, pocket layout is locked in and I'm not too eager to alter it. Which means, my knife rides in the right front with my keys and a pair of folding reading glasses in a case about the size of a Zippo (freakin' love those things by the way!!!!). I'm considering some knives that are a touch long and/or on the heavier side (Case Tribal Lock, Lionsteel Roundhead, three-tiered SAK's, etc.) and am concerned about them flopping over in the bottom of the pocket and wondering if a slip will help.

As always, thanks in advance.

I always use a slip with traditionals, only. It cuts down on the wear and tear. I prefer a soft form fitted to a stiff case like the one that comes with the Northwoods. I find it does keep its’ position, nicely. Maybe try one and see what you think.

I wasn't a big fan of them until I made myself one from some scrap 4oz leather to try. It does keep my traditionals upright instead of laying sideways in my pocket though and it's been a lot nicer carry wise. Now I Probably won't carry a traditional without one from here on out.

I don’t like them. I’ve already got enough junk filling up my pockets, I don’t need the additional bulk of a pocket slip taking up even more space. I also think it’s too much work to get your knife out of a slip when you need it.

For what it’s worth, I feel like this is a thread that pops up on a fairly regular basis. Here’s a similar thread started last January: Pocket slips. What do you think? And another from a couple years back: Pocket Slips/Sheaths

Very thin nappa or goat leather ones like the French make are tolerable. I use them if transporting a decent knife in a bag to cut down on knocks & losing it. But, I don't like them in the pocket at all, too much bulk, too fiddly to extract the knife when wanting to use it:( As I don't carry anything else in my knife pocket, coins keys are taboo, a pouch, slip, knife purse :D is redundant. Lot of people enthuse about the ones that KSF offer with Northwoods knives, I've had a couple but think they are thick, unbending and like having some shoe in your pocket:eek: No thanks ;)

I don't use pocket slips because like some others have mentioned, I carry my knives in pockets with no other items. The pocket lining serves as the pocket slip.

I also like my pocket knives to lay horizontal at the bottom of my pocket. I've never carried any other way my entire life unless the knife had a pocket clip or was large enough to require a belt sheath.

Fortunately, the watch pocket on my jeans is large enough to carry 95% of my knives horizontally.

I like it when wearing dress pants, or pajama pants. Get one and try it, for me the benefit is it keeps he knife from falling out of my pocket while sitting

Rarely. Although today I am using the Northwoods leather slip that came with my Fayette Jack. Sometimes the right sized pocket slip can help position the knife just right, it all depends on the pants I’m wearing.

Travman Travman That's a great looking 16 you sport there, not often seen. I'll admit Canoes are a low priority pattern for me but the bone and Spear on that look marvellous:cool:

Thanks, Will

Always a pocket slip these days. I tend to carry larger and heavier knives, and prefer to suspend them into my pocket. The slip also helps protect the bone and wood covers on my favorite knives.

This particular slip is very important to me. I made it years ago, for my father-in-law to carry his Camillus camp knife. When he passed a couple years ago, I started using it every day. It fits a scout pattern perfectly, loops around my belt loop, and hangs into my front pocket.

This subject comes up fairly frequently, as already mentioned. I've been using a pocket slip or pouch for years and haven't had a knife slip out of my pocket since starting. That wasn't the case pre slip. They also help keep a knife upright in the pocket. The extra few seconds it takes me to access the knife is a small price to pay.

I use a pocket slip when I carry a knife that's too big for my watch pocket (my preferred method).
I agree that they are kind of a pain to get your knife out to use it, and you have to set the slip down somewhere or put it back in your pocket. But I do like that knife rides vertically in the pocket and doesn't slide around or bother me like a horizontal riding knife. I will also use a slip when I carry two knives, usually a small "user" in the watch pocket and a larger "pocket jewelry" knife in the slip. Slips are cheap enough to buy and try out for yourself, it's really the only way to know for sure if it'll work for you. Some love 'em, others hate 'em, I'm somewhere in the middle.

I've been wanting to try that method for a while now. I'll have to convert a slip to this style. Very nice.
