Pocket Slips: Yay or Nay?

Nay, I like really like the simplicity of tossing a folder into my pocket an forget it's there.

However, as folders go, I like em small so they don't make much of a footprint on the outside of my jeans.

Are you being facetious? Carrying a pistol without a holster is unsafe. That isn't the case for carrying a pocketknife.

I believe you are entirely misinterpreting his point.

He is saying we don't belittle or talk down about gun holsters and call them gun purses, so why make fun of pocket knife slips, and call them little knife purses.......

That was what I got from that statement.... not that he advocated carrying a gun in a pocket minus a holster.....

Now, I have knives that I carry in pocket slips....not because it is convenient, or makes the knife easier to carry. I use knife slips, because it allows me to carry more pocket knives without them banging I to each other!!!

I usually have at least 3 slipjoints kn my pockets. One big hunker in the right pocket. At least two in the left..... sometimes I have as many as 5. One in each front pocket with a slip, one without, and one in the coin pocket. (Usually a holstered gun, and a few spare magazines, and a modern folder, or a fixed blade, or pair of matched fixed blades as well, but those go on or tucked behind the belt with static cords Japanese style....)

Now, disclaimer.......

I don't have a need for lots of knives at work..... they mostly just stay in my desk......because I have to pass through secure areas like the jail and courthouse multiple times per day.

I do, however cut an apple every day at lunch!!!

When I'm our doing outdoors stuff, I tend to carry a few less... because I dont want all the weight and potential for loss. Maybe three folders then, a d a belt knife......

Buckaroo/folding knife pouch all the way. This is my own personal one:

Have done colors for those inclined:

Thong back feeds onto your belt loop and ya put the rest in your pocket:

That way you can still get to it under your leggings by just pulling on the thong:

Squeeze the bottom and the knife pops out:

Leave your pouch dangling while you use your knife then tuck it all back together when you are done.

Case closed, (opps sorry for the completely intentional pun):

This is the best type of Slip in my opinion .
It protects the knife in the pocket from other objects , it secures and attaches the knife to your person reducing the chance of accidental loss and the slip itself is never misplaced or lost when you are using the knife .
It ticks all the boxes and Ive tried just about all of them .
The next best option is a slip/sheath with a pocket clip which modernises a tradition in the sense of access and carry without altering the knife from its Traditional platform .
Horsewright - Dave makes those as well and they are definitely worth a look .

I rarely used a pocket a slip until recently...

I started using this exact pocket slip a few weeks back, with a Kaweco Liliput fountain pen. I wear business attire, and the latest slacks I've been wearing have vertical-cut pockets. I've had my 78 in smooth bone slip out of my pocket a few times sitting at a desk. The slip not only keeps the knife securely in the pocket (and at the proper orientation), but I've found I use the pen daily in almost every meeting I attend. Also, on suit pants, the pockets are VERY thin fabric and the sharp swedges wreak havoc on the pocket liners.
On the weekends and in jeans, the knife goes straight in the pocket with the keys.

I carry my Tribal Lock in a modified Case Soft Leather Sheath. I carefully removed the belt loop, making it a pocket slip. It's a little bulkier than some pocket slips, but has the advantage of protecting both bolsters. Plus, I've yet to forget and leave my knife in my pants pocket.:)

I like slips, especially the dangler variety. This picture shows a few of mine. The three dangler slips on the left were made by Ron Ryder, and as far as I can tell he is no longer in business. The two on the right were made by Horsewright. With a dangler that fits the knife well things are more secure in the pocket, and even if you go upside down and the knife falls out of your pocket, it is still hanging from your belt.

I take great pride in the nicer knives I feel privileged to own, but won't use a slip - too bulky. I take ownership of every mark on my knives - the ones with the most marks are the most loved.

This forum defines traditional knives as something grandpa would be comfortable with...mine wouldn't have had his pocket knife in a slip. It was in his pocket, just like all my uncles' kept their knives in a pocket. Now he carried his change in a coin purse. Tony's right it's a knife purse :)

I am ambivalent about slip cases, I own a few but find I very seldom use them for carry. I would be more likely to drop the knife getting it out, than it being damaged from carrying in my pocket.

Well, I got my wife a really nice red one from @knifeswapper and if the knife I'm eyeballing is still there when the right funds come in, I will likely get one for it as it is quite pretty. :)
