Pocket Slips?!

One of the main and only reasons why I never really carried a traditional folder for EDC is because of the way it "rode" in my pocket, meaning that it always eventually had positioned itself horizontally in my front pants pocket. Growing up in the 70's (tight jeans) I had Buck, Case, and Schrade knives that stayed where I put them (thank God for youth!). As I aged that situation has changed, fast forward to today where my pants are looser. I had on occasion carried my Grandfathers Uncle Henry in my back pocket, but I felt that there must be a better way to carry this fine knife.

I am now rekindling my love for conventional folders, add that with the finding of pocket slips (knivesshipfree.com), could that be the answer to my quest for a comfortable way of carrying this type of knife without resorting to bibb coveralls and/or carpenter jeans?

How do you carry your traditional folders?

I love the pocket slips and they make a huge difference. I carry many knives in the pocketslips and I carry some just free in my pocket. Just depends on the knife.

How do they ride? Do they keep the folder vertical?

BTW ... looking at front pocket carry (preferred)

I carry mine loose in the pocket. They don't bother me next to my wallet, so there is no point in using a knife purse. I don't mind a little wear and tear, I don't like the added bulk, and don't want to deal with the extra steps of putting a knife in and taking it out of the leather.

YMMV of course.

The KSF pocket slips definitely help keep the knife riding vertically, at least in my experience. I'm sure it depends on pocket size, shape, and how loose your pants fit, but it makes a noticeable difference to me. I do find them a little bulky for smaller knives, like the 15, but they do work well. I'd be interested in trying something a little smaller for a 3.5" knife, but for anything 3.75"-4.25" I think the KSF is probably the right size.

As another option, applicable to just a few knives with lanyard attachment points, is a knotted lanyard. I've been carrying a SAK Pioneer lately with a leather lanyard and a stainless bead from Hinderer. I find that between the size of the knots and the weight of the bead it helps to keep the lanyard hanging out of my pocket which keeps the knife riding vertically. This has proven to be the most convenience method of carrying a knife next to a pocket clip in my experience. Quick and easy to pull and stays in place relatively well.

Here is my Pioneer setup:

Thanks all ... I think KSF is a good start then.

@slide13 ... does everything that you display fit in your KSF pocket slip?

@Primble ... That is a very nice set that you have. Is that custom?

I'm less concerned with positioning in the pocket, and more concerned with keeping my hard earned pocket knives in the best condition possible over the long haul. There is absolutely no need to keep your pocket knives sharing space with your house and car keys, and spare change, unless you really don't give a rat's patoot, and think that a purposely or negligently, and cosmetically trashed knife has some sort of cool factor.
For a small investment, KSF knife sheath's are what I use....your knives will thank you later on down the road.

I'm a big fan of the KSF pocket slips.

They don't seem to carry the small ones anymore, but I received one with my IRJ, and it's perfect for a thin single spring under 4".

For the multiple springs or larger singles, the Mainstreet pocket slip is hard to beat. I've found the black ones break in quicker, but sometimes you just need the brown leather :)

For a small fixed and either a single spring or smaller multiple spring slipjoint, the Pocono pocket sheath is awesome. In the words of Derrick, "It's what I have in my pocket right now." :)

Hope that helps a bit :)

If anyone wants a small one, we have them. We just basically discontinued them on the site because the Mainstreet pocktslip covers so many models and by the time it breaks in, I like it 10X better than the others we have.

Yeah, the Mainstreet is almost the perfect catch-all, and is almost invisible in the pocket.

I agree with Christian. I have to say that I tend to carry knives around 3,5" closed.
Yet many people here use pocket slips (like the KSF ones), and they look good.
So if they work for you, you know you're not alone :p

I pulled the trigger for a KSF pocket slip.
Mainly to carry this folder that I received from my grandfather.

@Crazy Canuck ... Thanks, that gives me a good visual.

I pulled the trigger and bought one from KSF ...

No, I don't use my KSF with any of that, sorry for the confusion. I have used my KSF for a GEC 15, 78, and my Erickson.

I just drop it into my RFP loose. My pants fit nice and loose and the pockets are big and roomy. I don't really notice the knife at all. If I do use a slip (it's rare) it's more to protect the knife than anything to do with how it lays in my pocket. The KSF slip is nice. I also have one made of thick/soft leather that I simply cut to shape and sewed it up one side to make a slip. Works great. Just about any of my traditional folders will fit in it.

With my 92 Eureka Jack...

Thank you and yes - the dark one on the left is from Esnyx and the one on the right is from Gunstock Jack - both hand made and both are really great pieces of work. I also have a slip, that came with a Charlow order from Knives Ship Free. It is nice, as well. ;)
