Pocket Survival Kit

I love making these kinds of kits too, But living in the Los Angeles area I am having trouble finding a compact gas mask for my pocket. :p

Nice job! ;)

As usual, another great video. I really enjoy your videos and I've learned something from each one of them.

I have a question, what kind of twine are you using that is 100 pound test and has inner cords like 550?

Also, if you can fine the room, pack a small vial of bug juice if going out over night. I tried to use mine on an over nighter and was eaten alive. I came back in around 2am. I have one of those bigger perfume sample vials filled with deet. It's enough to cover my hands, arms, face and neck so I can make it through a night anyway. I have also used MRE Tabasco bottles for this and they work well to.

You can buy unused sample vials on ebay very very cheap and in many different sizes. I have bought some from a seller and she gave me a bunch of extras to. I also bought a dozen small brown glass screw cap bottles from her. They are VERY small and will stand up and fit in an Altoids kit, they are that small. They are MUCH better for holding iodine tablets for longer term.

Iodine tablets left out of a sealed bottle will break down line, turn things yellow, and rust your tin. Ask me how I know. Even my aspirins turned yellow. Iodine is very corrosive. Just a thought as it looks like yours are wrapped in foil or something.

Anyway, here is where I get my vials and bottles from, and the bottles has the white teflon seal in the cap that iodine needs.

Your signalling critic may have wanted that new 'Bear Grylls Commemorative Satelite Phone', complete with solar and windup power backups included...

Belittling other forum members, who are meaningfully engaging, can only worsen the level of discussion. :thumbdn:

the thing about compass's is that you i have 3 norths grid north true north and magnetic north the thing you have know and it comes on most military maps is the declination so you have to subtract or add a certain number to adjust for magnetic north that is why the military uses lensatic compass so you can adjust for magnetic north

well really cool vials but 144 is a little much for me. do you think if i went to the mall, dressed in a way that makes me look a lot more polite and young they would give me like 3 or 4 vials?

I have seen a few threads on PSK lately. I really like survival kits. I don't know why I do. I enjoy putting then together. I like trying to think of items that have multiple uses. Once that process is complete, I attempt to shove it all in to a very small package. I always carry a small kit in my pack while in the woods. If I have a base camp I put the kit on my belt or in a cargo pocket. I was asked to do a vid on my kit so here it is.

Here are a couple of pics.

For those of you who can't or don't watch vids here is a breakdown.

The pouch is a US GI compass case
Mylar survival blanket
1 gallon ziplock bag
Turley PSK knife
2 band-aids
2x2 gauze pad
Snare wire
Fishing line
3 hooks
5 sinkers
100 lb test cord
Tin foil
Iodine tabs
Wire saw
Fire steel
Fatwood
3 needles
Button compass

This kit takes care of; shelter, water, knife, sustenance, signaling, first aid, and fire.

At last - a considerate person. I don't watch videos, for the most part, because I get charged for downloads over a certain amount. Thank you.

As DEET is a plastic solvent, just be sure your container will hold.

Could have sworn I replied to this thread! Too many damn forums to keep up with.

WOW, no kidding, 144 is a little much for me too. When I bought from that seller, they were selling in lots of 12, 24 and on up. I'm sure if you asked, they would sell in smaller lots. I just ordered a dozen of several different sizes.

Oh and I tested them for over a month with 100% Deet to see if they would leak. They held up fine. I do dip the caps in wax to really seal them up and add another line of defense to help make sure it doesn't unscrew or loosen up on me and leak.

skab8541, great little kit you have there, can I ask what kind of braided cordage you have in it?

Also, you might want to add in Pepcid in your little bag of pills. A few weeks ago I had serious allergic reaction to some mold and ended up in the ER for the first time in my life. Long story short, the ER doc said, this may sound funny, but take Pepcid with Benadryl and it will REALLY stop any reaction you are having.

She said that the Pepcid not only blocks the acid your body makes but also something your body is producing that's causing you to react and break out. To be honest, I forgot what she called it exactly, I just remember what she said to use and why. Now, when I have a reaction, and I have a few times, I take two Benadryl and two Pepcid and it knocks it out in a few minutes.

Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) is an antihistamine and can be used to treat allergic reaction.

Yes, it is. I'm sorry, I should have been more clear. The doc said to take both Pepcid and Benadryl together. She said they work together much better than they do seperately or on their own. Just passing on what she said, and for me, it works and works GREAT.

Thanks, I didn't know Amsteel made rope that small. I have replaced the cable on my hydraulic winch with 3/8'' rope from Amsteel.

Have you ever looked at TECH CORD made by New England Ropes? They make it in 3mm which is a touch under 1/8'' but it has 3000 pound breaking strength. They also make it in 5mm and that's 5000 pound test and used for emergency rappelling. I carry a small spool of 5mm x 25m in my ruck.

pepcid, zantac, prilosec, etc... are also known as type 2 antihistamines and yes, they are supposed to work well with benadryl.
tyrkon - a niosh p100 filter mask with carbon will do double duty as a short lived gas mask for most chemical irritants. You will still need some form of goggle, but it would be enough to at least get you out of the worst of the smoke or CN/CS fog in a riot situation. Also, dilute dawn dish soap will neutralize OC sprays, so a small spray bottle to wash your eyes out is a good thing. (I used to know a lot of LEO's who carried this in case the wind shifted when spraying a perp)

What should be in a GHB? BTW - nice video!

I agree with him. A whistle should be in there but to each their own. I wouldn't carry a wire saw or a tin knife and I'm sure IA wouldn't carry some of the stuff I do.

Odd, but the OD Type I that I have doesn't have any inner cords, just a casing. However, the black cord which looks the same externally (except the color) has five very small inner cords, four white and one tan and black. Must be a different type.
