Pointless thread - just some bad pics of my afternoon's light chopping

Yep, I'm goanna have to get one now.
Any brand recommendations?

I cannot recommend a specific brand because I have not used any others, only 2 SaberCut Saws and this wire saw that was given to me (unknown brand).

I posted the following in response to a question in another thread but I will just repeat it here, because the Busse forum is my home here.

I tested the SaberCut Saw and the wire saw today. The SaberCut sailed through that pine trunk in 15 seconds (it had a bit of a head start because there was a slight wedge where I had previously chopped). The stitching in the handle did come loose after about 13 seconds. Luckily I had spare webbing that I carried to make handles for the wire saw. I repaired it and sawed through the remaining in 2 secs.

I have seen a video review of someone using this saw and it binding. I have never had it bind on me, whether on live, sappy pine like today or on harder dry wood.

I used the wire saw and could not make it even half an inch into the wood without it binding. The metal bracket also pulled open after a few seconds. I guess that was my fault for putting too much pressure on it. I put the loop into the split ring and continued but could not get very far. This is the type with the three strands of wire braided together.

Perhaps it works on harder, dry wood, or like someone said, on antlers and perhaps my technique was bad but be that as it may - I will not use it in future.

On the SaberCut Saw. I will replace the handles with my own webbing, knotted rather than sowed and I will carry spares as I can see wear & tear where the webbing hooks through the metal, so it will eventually break again.

Results of each:

I had previously sworn to myself that I will never post Youtube videos, but I took some video anyway. So my Youtube debut, just for you:

Plus a few short chopping videos.

These are not comparative chopping testing videos, so I did not attempt to stabilize the wood (lots of energy lost in the bouncing trunk), or hit the sweet-spot every time, or ensure my technique was perfect for the camera, or whatever objective testers do. They are just me chopping away and having fun and recording it just because I was recording the saw videos anyway.

Sweet set of videos!! Thank you so much! :D :D :D

Great pictures! Your pups are so cute! Especially the one with the lazy ear!

I once had a Girlfriend with a lazy pair of ahhhh, oh never mind I just figured out they were lazy because she was old...;)

Nice pichers, I need to get a chopper one of these days.

Just noticed that in the 1st picture of the dogs, he Really likes to have his picture taken, doesn't he?

:D Yes, he started young. At that age (2 months in pics below) he was the smaller of the two (on the right) and he even pulled a tongue at me.

He is also the one in the videos that makes all the noise and keeps running into the frame, chasing the wood chips and trying to bite my arm and the cutting tools.

Very Very informative post my friend.
I have had the same saw thing for years but never used it, looks like it worked great.

Thank you. I had fun doing it.

But of course you have not used it. You don't need to. Most of the things that we have to cut, you could just snap like twigs with your bear / bare hands. :D

L2 great post, i know this is the busse forum but that 171 has me drooling! I have got to get me one of them!!!

Great pics, is that on your property?

It is not on my property but it is only a few minutes walk from my house. I walk my dogs there almost everyday. It is just a small patch. I do have a dead tree in my yard that I chop on regularly though.

Tim :D

Hi Tim,

Thanks for posting this thread. I have a few questions on the BM 171 (BladeSports) blade:

1) You mention the BM 171 is the best chopper of those you've used. Does that include the NMFBM, and specifically how would you compare those two knives on chopping?

2) I'm assuming the geometry of the BM 171 includes a finer edge than the Busses. Did you notice how the M4 compares to INFI in terms of taking damage from small, hard material such as sand/pebbles in the bark of the wood? Could you compare the M4 to INFI for us in terms of how it stands up to that kind of damage?

3) Also, could you compare the M4 to INFI in terms of ease of cleanup and patina/rust resistance?

Thanks a million,
Will

Will

1) I only have the NMFBMLE, not the thinner .25 NMFBM but that is on my shopping list.

2) Here are some pics that might give you an idea of the geometry comparisons to the LE.

I cannot speak to the damage resistance as I have not encountered that yet with either. The only one of my choppers that ever sustained noticeable damage beyond regular edge degradation from use was my Fehrman Final Judgment from a hidden hammock-hook (wood had grown over it) in my chopping tree. The only one of my choppers that was ever hit into dirt was my B11 when cleaning trails, it was intentional as it was soft soil with no rocks so there was no edge damage.

3) Re. rust resistance, patina / stain resistance. To put it in context, I clean, oil and lubricate my knives often, always before storing them and after every use. The only exception is when I am camping or backpacking or if I know I will use them a few days in a row. But they never stay dirty for an extended period of time.

So for most of my knives I have not had much issue with rust, patina or staining. There are a few exceptions though. M4 being one of them. I have never had rust with M4, but it does stain easily. Not a big deal for me though. These were wet for a while while using them in the rain, and also when left wet for too long while cleaning.

I did some more chopping today and took some video and pics. I have been on a Victorinox kick since X-Mas so got these and I am very happy that my old-logo Victorinox Woodsman arrived today. So for some non-Bussekin knife pr0n.

great shots with the mistress and 171! it may be heresy in the Busse forum but the 171 will be the next big blade I buy.

Great thread! Informative for me at least. I gotta check out a pocket chainsaw, looks useful and great companion to a chopper.

The pics look great too :D

it may be heresy in the Busse forum

I want to stress that I mean no disrespect to Busse when I post anything about non-Bussekin knives in this forum. With the exception of an odd post in other places I post almost exclusively in the Busse forum because this is where I feel most at home within the larger BF community. Bussekin constitutes the vast majority of my collection and will continue to grow more than any other.

I typically try to avoid any cross-brand comparative type of posts but if someone asks a sincere question I don't want to be rude by not answering them truthfully even if it involves non-Bussekin content.

I am still relatively new here and have only met a handful of Hogs and some of the Bussekin crew IRL but nonetheless, I still feel comfortable here because it feels like a relatively tight-knit group where things are kept respectful and honest due to the leadership as well as the regular posters. So I feel that we can discuss things relatively openly and learn from each other, within limits.

Anyway, apologies for the emo post but I just want to be clear that I am not trying to be disrespectful to our hosts here when I post any non-Bussekin related content.
