Polar Bear Attack

I used to go polar watching on the tundra outside of Churchill manitoba. the best place was where the sledders set up running lines to keep their teams outside of town, (hollywood aside, I've never seen a sledder let their dog near strangers off a lead, or let the dogs get above them) the bears would crawl in to steal food untill one dog on the lead noticed, then full power out of dodge, kind of a cat and mouse game, but only because the bears knew where the safe line was. I'd take a polar bear over a pissed off lead sled husky, at least polar bears want to survive, lead dogs will die for the rest of the team if they think its necessary. funny stuff to watch, though. the dogs in the pic musta been pretty confidant that they could take the bear.
 
Hunting carnivores are drawn to anything that looks like fleeing prey. When really well-fed, they aren't going to make the effort of getting up to pursue it, but if they're out and about, they may. This is not viciousness, it's instinctual behavior. Domestic cats might fall into a different category. Young wild felines will explore prey before learning to kill it, often showing some signs of fear while doing so.
 
It is instinctual behavior, and I've never said it's out of maliciousness. But well fed lions, wild dogs, and nearly all carnivores are known to kill and not eat the corpse. They do kill purely for "pleasure" or "instinct" or whatever we want to call it. They do it out of instinct, and it's not a statement of whether they're vicious or malicious or bad. They're not people, and morality doesn't apply to something that lacks the sentience to choose right or wrong. It's nature. It's just what they are.

Black bears have a taste for boy scouts !! The second one, here in Hickory State Park ,in Eastern PA. The boy played dead and avoided serious injury !
