Ultimately, the time frame from now until all votes made and tallied wouldn't change if the model/pattern was decided first or last. But that does not mean that it does not have an affect.

For ease of math, If there was one week given per poll, we have;
- blade material
- handle material
- Blade pattern/number/orientation/grind
- shield/etch/stamp/etc

That alone is at least a month, and I am sure I am missing some, but that is if they are ran consecutively, instead of concurrently.

If we voted on a manufacturer last rather than first, the only thing it could do would be cause further confusion, and disappointed folks once their month spent building a knife is decided against. On top of that, we would have a a block that may not purchase the knife out of being discontent with the outcome.

As far as voting on the pattern/model first goes, it will set up the future votes for the knife so folks involved have a common end goal and know exactly what they are building.

The best option of getting something unique as a forum knife from GEC seems to be long term planning for next year.
Plenty of time to plan, arrange monetary handling & distribution.
I think going with Buck for this year gives us the option of blade steel, covers, blade grind, a nice presentation box and
getting the knife before the peak holiday shipping frenzy. (When stuff gets lost, destroyed, misrouted, etc.)
Lastly it would add variety to the forum collection, having example from most major manufactures even though some are gone.

The main things important to me are getting something I couldn't just buy anytime. The 2 bladed 301 with FFG clip and Sheepsfoot seems to be a definite winner by leaps and bounds. I also have no desire to exclude the members outside of the USA.
I would agree with the thought process of doing a pattern or style that hasn't been done before except the fact that not all of us have been around long enough to be included. I personally have only been around the Porch for last year's knife. I was thrilled at the chance for a TC Barlow but money issues left me out. I know I'm not the only one that is new enough for that to factor into my vote. Some people didn't seem too excited about a single clip blade GEC #14 but since I haven't had one I would have been excited for that. I'm fully pumped for the 301 though, so it's all good :)

Only one way to tell what the group would like for this year... People, let’s get to the polls!

Sorry if I missed this but, if we go with a Buck will it continue with the dot tradition? Will it have two dots on the tang to indicate the year?

Depending on the blade steel chosen. There are steel options that would allow for the BF tang stamp. But some hard supersteels that it would not work on. Depends on what folks want to vote for.

I wonder if the laser etch that was mentioned could do the dots and etch the tang as a stamp would?

i have absolutely zero interest in a tiny little 14...

I am with you, but there seem to be plenty who disagree. I just want the final selection made. I for one will be very sad if it isn't the Buck 301. But I said I would get whatever was decided, and I'll stick by that, even if it is a 14.

Since this is your first post in the Traditionals Forum, you should know that this forum is international (with many incredible participants being in countries other than the USA) and the 501(being a lockback) is not international friendly.

The stamp is always superior, I hear that it can be done with 154 and that is a very nice stainless.

Even though we can't vote until next week, the GEC proposal feels like an also ran, no distinguishing features, same old carbon/brass-you might be lucky&get all steel liners, all part of a general run that can be fitted in and in alliance with SFOs. This latter point could I suppose make the potential GEC Forum Knife attractive to potential flippers....something many people dislike. Some people have talked about making it special by having a cap-lifter, have they actually HELD a 14? I feel it is too puny to host a lifter realistically and anyway, we had one on the 2011 Forum Knife, a completely new pattern I might add that GEC was able to use as a test-bed for their expertise in bottle openers. They also made a load of other 85 variants from the success of this Forum Knife and very good knives too, never any stainless of course:rolleyes: But perhaps the behind the scenes discussions may yield more interesting details from GEC, it ought to!

I mooted the 14 as a Sleeveboard to give it a distinct profile but apparently it's too difficult to fit into GEC's schedule this year - despite using a frame and blades that already exist - well OK fair enough they've got a full order book and that's excellent business. In other words, they can't really offer the forum anything special or different this year so let's leave them out. Let's get something special organised by them for 2019, why this mania to have a run of the mill GEC for this year because it can be fitted in?? We could have an all stainless high steel Large Stockman or 2 Blade variant with our choice of scales, blade stamp, delivered quite quickly from a long established manufacturer that has not been given its chance to make a Forum Knife. Something new, something different, something possible and something to measure GEC's worth by as well.

Leghog that just depends on the country and its knife laws. Lots of possibilities.
Yes, but slipjoints are legal pretty much everywhere:).
