I think "need" goes away at about the 6th knife.
“Need” went away in the mid-to-late 90’s when all I owned were these four: the 503 my first Buck from my dad. The 110 and Leatherman from my grandpa. And the 549 Fishlocker, the first knife I ever bought myself.

A lot of knives have come and gone since then, but I can’t say I’ve ever had a need that these couldn’t have handled.

This thread is really fun! Interesting to read why and how you all got into collecting. I blame this forum entirely for getting me started lol! When I first came here in 2022, I owned a 119 and a 110. The only other Buck I'd ever owned was a 503 that my Dad gave me that I lost a few years later. I finally decided to replace it but couldn't remember the model number, which led me here. After seeing all the awesome Buck knives, and reading everyone's stories about them, I went Buck-wild for a while and started seeking out any model or variation that intrigued me. When I reached 100 it was a wake-up call for me and I have slowed way down for the past year or so, don't think I'm anywhere near 200 yet. As I've mentioned on here a couple of times before, you guys are a bunch of enablers 🤣 but it is great fun, and I'm happy to be part of this special group.

Sitting here at work, counting the 1 in my pocket, I think I have 27. Mix of 100 series, 300 series and 500 series and a couple of fillet knives. No collectibles, all working knives. My earliest manufactured is a late 60's 105 I fished out of the 'bay a few years ago. It rides in my little Kelty pack in my jeep. I tend to switch out 309's and 303's for my daily pocket carry or one of my 501's. I bought my mother a 102 back in 1975 or '76 for camping when I was a kid for Christmas. I thought she needed a good knife. She re-gifted it too me a few years ago before passing, almost brand new. That one is my favorite. I use it a lot when out and about in the woods. I have Dad's little 505 he carried. One of the first ones made. Got an electric burn on the tip, from cutting a wire I suppose...I bought my first Buck, a 301 Stockman from Oshmans Sporting Goods around 1975 with my own money earned from mowing lawns when I was 12. I carried that knife until about 1988. I like Case knives, but our last name is Buck (no relation), so of course......🤷‍♂️
