POLL:Is the Axis Lock the best folder in the world?

There's no such thing as "The Best" (at least not yet anyway). Different knife for different jobs. But, I've got the mini-Axis on me right now and it's not bad (though the clip's on the wrong end for me).

This mini-Axis is the sharpest knife I have ever received from Benchmade.

Even with ATS-34, versus some of the newer ones, it is by far my favorite. I'm hoping M2 will be available in the near future.

My thoughts might change though when I get a Pat Crawford custom carnivour. I'm trying right now whether to get talonite or the Damascus. I know Damascus is the best steel for a carry knife, but it sure is one heck of a looker. Either way, I'm looking forward to getting this knife.

By the way - I talked with Mr. Crawford for a few minutes earlier this week when I order a Crawford/Kasper neck knife and he seems to be a very down to earth man and was more than willing to talk knives for a while. I like supporting people like this, so I just wanted to pass my experience along. Guess this should have gone in the Good, Bad, & Ugly forum.

Axis lock is pretty good, BUT not the best. Too bad BM had has problems poor QC - both of my 710's had the blade hitting the spacer problem, were returned to get repaired, and in turn when I got them back (each too 6 weeks door to door), were SOLD. During the time they were out for repair, I didn't miss them at all.

I prefer the rolling lock by REKAT. I own a couple of old Pioneers, and a Carnivour. I wouldn't want to say that the REKATs are the "best in folders in the world" - they are up there in the top though

I would say YES, the 710 series are my favorite folding knives of all time. I like the Sebenza just fine, but I think the pricepoint leaves the average person feeling somewhat reluctant to use the damn thing. Thats no good, how can a knife be the BEST in terms of use if it's considered by most who own it simply too expensive to scratch? I will stick with my 710sbt, it's the best folder I have every held, and (all things being equal), probably the best folder I will ever hold.

I like the Mel Pardue axis lock. Very well done for a production folder. But, production heat treated ats-34 (not exciting), great ergonomics, but bland feeling, NO sex appeal(not in BM's line of thinking).

Liner lock getting hard to accept, Reeve Sebenza looks better all the time.

Yeah I'm crazy, but what do you want me to do about it

Codeman,

I totally agree with your comments on Pat Crawford. I have purchased four knives from him and have had only the best experiences with him. Recently, I sent in one of my KFFs to have the micarta scales bead blasted and to have him change the thumb stud from a cylindrical design to a conical one. He only charged me $10 for the return shipping. I had the knife back within three weeks. He also adjusted the liner lock.

As for the Axis, I agree with Joe Talmadge that the handle needs more of a cutout to be used for defensive purposes. I like the Axis lock for the potential reliability advantages, but it is still too new to be sure.

Right now I am very happy with my Crawford KFF with its blade modification.

A friend and my brother like the way their knives lock and initially cut, but my friend's knife is now missing a tip and my brother's knife has chips on the edge.

Would love to see this knife come out. Hope Benchmade is listening.

I am with Joe.

Thumb hole, index cutout/guard like structure, M2, Full flat grind, would all make it the better, but given it's limitation it is damn good.

Excellent, but no one knife can be called the best. Since you didn't mnetion price, I'll go with the Sebenza.

My axis lock 710bt came in yesterday and so far it looks like the best folding knife i have owned. A sebenza would be nice ,but i dont feel like spending $325.00 for one. Buit I cant say if it is the best folder of all time.
