The thread about people buying cheap knives made me think about buying vs. actually using knives. The one place where I use a knife almost every day is in the kitchen, yet my kitchen knives aren't the highest quality knives in the house. I got to thinking about how much time we spend actually using knives on average vs. just talking about them or buying / trading them.

So hopefully there's a poll included with this post: what do we spend the most time doing with our knives?

honest answer?

flicking it open...about 10,000 times a day.

cutting whatever...most tape and such..i have no idea why at this stage of my life i'm liking knives, but i do.

to cure my flicking obsession, i've got a BK2 coming.

guess i'll start throwing it into the walls:D

work/home related tasks, but also they see plenty of kitchen time. My knives are usually around the 3" blade mark, so they can't do plenty of kitchen tasks, though. Which is where the normal kitchen knives come into play...

They'll also see some light whittling, though I don't really know how to whittle. I'll just cut up some wood for the heck of it.

honestly... I do the most work with my 30 dollar slip joints and let my 70 dollar folders sit on my desk :)

the most time, playing with 'em, even while camping cutting chores are play time.

Kitchen knives will continue being cheap until SWMBO decides to not abuse them, then there will be an upgrade.

I am an urban homeowner. As such, there is always something around that needs fixing. I've been carrying pocket knives for about 50 years. They are useful daily tools. I use them when camping as well, but that's only a few times a year. For EDC purposes, it's a work thing.

Tape
Boxes
String
small brush
envelopes
plastic zip ties (yes the Para D2 destroys them!)
whittling
'Maters & other various foods

I'm a flat grind addict. :)

For 20 years in the US Coast Guard I used my knife everyday. Cutting lines, boxes, at the range, you name it. Now, I just oil and play with them. For household use I must admit I use a $20 throw away.......Could never let one of my Benchmade's touch a ups box......

I use my knives lightly. I can be seen watching TV and filicking them open and closed-it drives my dad crazy. They are just useful to have around. I probably use my phone the most out of my entire EDC.

I tend to buy certain knives for certain roles, I have 2-3 hard use knives that I use when I work. I have a kershaw JYDII that see some kitchen time. I live in a pretty rural are so occasionally I'll just go out for a short hike so I'll carry a fixed blade or two on me and sometimes practice some bushcraft, and a lot of my smaller knives, like the spyderco D'fly just gets played with.

I got a job working for my brother-in-law doing landscaping, remodeling, and some minor construction. The other day we were replacing some old wiring and a one handed opener was a much appreciated tool.

All of the above!

To be fair, I guess when I am doing "all of the above" I am also thinking about my knife, other knives, and fondling it in use.
I guess if you added up ONLY the amount of time my knives are cutting stuff and compared it to ONLY the amount of time I am maintaining, fondling, thinking, or talking about them -the later probably gets more time.

I use them the most in the kitchen but like to use them outdoors and such. I also use them quite a bit for my work, although I am unemployed atm

For the record I use my knives, and multi's, everyday at work. They truely are a necessity. That statement is incase my wife reads this thread. Honestly, I do use my knives for work, however most of the time I spend fondling, sharpening and playing with my knives. I also spend a great deal of time on her talking and reading about knives.

yeah work and maintaning/sharpening. although if i didn't spend so much time maintaining/sharpeing i would be spending alot more time trying to get teh work done with them, so i think it balances out.
