I use knives in the kitchen a lot. Most of my knives don't get used much as I have 50 times more knives than I can use.:o

First option: Using them at work or somehow job related tasks (like home repair or yardwork)

Well, I only really do this with my LM Wave & Victorinox Cybertool. Not really with my other knives.

Second Option: Using them in the kitchen

Yeah, I do this a bit - often to test the knife on a tomato or to practise food prep so I get a feel for how the knife works.

Third Option: Using them for recreation (hunting, backpacking, camping, etc.)

Yep, many of my knives are bought with camping tasks in mind.

Fourth Option: Sharpening, fondling, oiling, flicking or otherwise playing with them

Umm :o - yeah, to be honest on this poll I had to choose this option. Mainly Sharpening, oiling and playing with them. I really like sharpening them till they cut like a razor - even my SAK & LM are 'shaving sharp'. Last night I stropped the blade on my LM Squirt S4 until it could shave. I am sure that I spend more than twice as much time on this option than the first 3 combined. :o

My Buck vantage gets used at work, then flipped open repeatedly at home while watching TV. I use my Vic Tinker the most at home though. I use it for what I call whittling, opening packages, screwing/unscrewing, toothpicking, and tweezing. Very useful.

I use my knives quite a bit,but I had to be honest. The sharpening, fondling, oiling, and flicking thing takes up the most time.I sharpen knives that are already razor sharp,I can't seem to help it.

I own mostly "hard use" folders. Besides tearing up an old couch for lost money and lighters, I use them for opening mail, trimming meat for BBQ, and doing drills with wave draws. My ZT300 (heavily modded) is my every day right pocket knife and I have never needed to use it to its full capability. Think soccer mom with an SUV. I like having overbuilt tools. I can equate it to owning a watch that is waterproof to 4000FT. I just equate that with better quality of materials and worksmanship.

Use mine at work constantly, cutting up fiber glass sheets, card board, scraping gaskets, medical tape, duct tape, and of course tons of rope cutting.Izula or RC-3 for work, however the little case knife I carry mostly gets fondled or used around the general public. My zdp delica is getting some r&r as it didn't like a day of opening concrete bags...

Honestly it is "All Of The Above" but I can only use so many knives at one time.

i mostly use it to open boxes and plastic bags at work. occasionally i'll use it to cut plastic oil bottles into funnels or cut cloth wrap over wires. very occasionally i'll pry at plastic trim pieces, open envelopes with the spine, or peel an orange. rarely, i'll sharpen a pencil or whittle while camping.

i spend about an hour every couple of weeks maintaining the edge.

i'm pretty much over opening and closing my knife without a reason.

I get alot of use out of my knives on the job. I issue Sheffield razor knives to the workers but I never seem to have one on me. I do use the razor knife as the bar to compete with when using one of my personal knives. Some do well, some not so much...;)

I said kitchen because that is mainly where I use them in cooking but because of California Knife Laws: A Comprehensive Guide
SECTION TWO: THE STREET-CARRY RULES (and a few totally banned types)

25d) Knives carried in sheaths which are worn openly suspended from the waist of the wearer are not concealed within the meaning of this section.

I can enjoy carrying my sheathed claw knife around town.

My wife carries this little Jeff Hall Hellion on her keys. The kydex is getting loose so I'm going to take it back and make a custom "biker" wallet that will have a sheath sewn in. She'll get a Swiss Army that has a built in USB drive.

thats a looks like a nice little fixed blade.

It's S30V and only cost me $30 :D

I use them any time theres a task(sometimes i look for cutting tasks;)) But most of the time i just "play" with the knife:D

For example i cut and buttered a bagel with my Delica ZDP SE today but i also opened it a few hundred times :D

All of the above. I don't connect with the cheap knife mentality. If I can afford a 200$ knife it's going to be the most used in my collection, not the least. I regularly use discontinued sprint run knives. I look at my collection from time to time and if I see a knife not getting much use that's worth my time to try and trade, I will. Users make up my entire collection save for a few gifts that are mostly kept for sentimental reasons.

I cut stuff at work, around the house, at camp and on the trails and in the kitchen if a properly sharpened kitchen knife isn't handy.

I do spend a lot of time tweaking my knife edges for optimum performance. Just today I re-sharpened my entire collection and reprofiled many of them to thinner edges. I really enjoy knife sharpening and putting a thin, hair whittling sharp edge on knives I own then seeing how well it cuts stuff.

Sime typical things I cut are boxes, food, skateboard grip tape, wood, briars, plastic shrink wrap, plastic containers and other typical daily cutting chores.
