If we assume it is in fact his wife who has tip-toed in here in an attempt to save her husband and set him on a path of righteousness, then even that means the dude still has not acknowledged or accepted what he has done.

He should be the one publicly apologizing and then working to make everyone as whole as he can possibly make them. He should not ask anyone to do any kind of business with him until that is done. That's what stand up person would do. People get messed up and bad things can happen to good people, be it by their own design or just the universe. Redemption is real but rare and there is a proper way to go about it. It starts by accepting what you've done, and then immediately stepping into the shoes of the people you've wronged. You as an individual matter little at that point. It is not about forgiveness and if that's what you're seeking, you still haven't got it. It's about doing whats right for those you wronged.

I don't buy any of this and don't believe for a second the dude is genuine.

He'd probably try to steal those also!

I am all for forgiveness and second chances provided the person acknowledges what they've done and then goes above and beyond to right their wrongs and start down a better path.

However, there comes a point where your transgressions outweigh any amount of restitution you can try and make and your bridge is forever burned.

I wonder, would this even be a question or conversation if instead of a well known craftsman it was a longtime and well known member with 1000s of posts spread over the forum and 100s of positive feedback that pulled the same shenanigans?

I think not.

I would have to take it a step further, and have the product in my hands before sending him a single penny! Even then, I'd still be leery.

He lost our trust, in a way that was even against the law, so now HE should have to trust his customers to pay him after they've received their products. It's a two-way street, Sketchy. o_O

*Excellent suggestion, imho.

what's "good for the goose..." , "turn about is fair play" sort of idea.

That way he may learn some empathy if a few folks treated him the way he treated me and others.

*assuming that could ever even become an option, personally I don't see it happening

Yeah, I doubt that ever happens either.

It is disappointing to me that some members are more focused on creating fantasy scenarios where they would give Steve Ketchen money than they are on the fact that Steve actively scammed people.

Steve makes nice shiny things. Got it! Hitler like dogs and Pol Pot was a great chef. That doesn't mean that they are deserving of a second chance. IMHO, instead of tacitly shilling for Steve Ketchen we should be holding him accountable and doing whatever we can to ensure he does not scam anyone else.

Comparing the dude to Hitler and Pol Pot seems a bit excessive.

I remember seeing some marvelous things he did in wood scales mostly for Spyderco knifes at that time, and I remember asking him if he did anything in carbon fiber he said no because he didn't like working with the stuff! but that doesn't mean I wouldn't try to have him make something agin, the guy did wonderful work, but I understand not all people are happy with him hear on the forum.

If you have not, read through the other 30 page thread on him and see if you come to the same conclusion.

If you have already read it, what makes you think you'll get what you pay for?

Are you serious???
Not happy with him?? A tad understated.
Knives.

PREACH!

Also, one of the two people to vote "Yes" is also the one single person to not vote for Derek Jeter so that he would get into baseball Hall of Fame unanimously. Of course I joke. :D

I probably have as much skin in this game as anyone, being probably Steve’s top customer and certainly someone who gave him a lot of free advertising (including sending several new customers his way) and I’m honestly not sure how I’d vote. I am indeed still out several knives and the money I paid up front for them to be modded (that was the way we always did business, I never had any cause to be concerned over the years he made scales for me). I went the law enforcement route myself, and was in contact with them for months to no avail - nothing was ever returned to me (I made sure he gave Steve my new address just in case).

I would agree that really no one has been able to demonstrate his level of quality and craftsmanship, given that I designed (with his inputs) every single scale set I commissioned. There are definitely other scale makers out there that make incredible aftermarket scales but none give you the custom options that Steve did, it was truly phenomenal. If my knives were ever returned to me (I figure I’ll never see the money again or the scales I ordered), I “might” be convinced to forgive Steve but it would take a lot for me to place a new order. It would actually take nearly all my resolve NOT to order something given how incredible his work is. The whole thing has honestly been a terrible disappointment and a bit of a harsh life lesson.

A poll about dealing with a thief "IF" the thief changes his thieving ways? Ah....what the heck I'll play.

"Yes" if I can shove him into a Industrial Size Sausage Grinder first.
