Poor man's Zero Tolerance

A while back I asked about the Chinese made knives with 440C in the Boker Forum. I was told, IIRC, that it was true 440C & "I think" that it came from the U.S., but don't quote me on it.

I've had a few Boker Plus folders, including a Chinese made one (A coated tanto folder) & it wasn't bad. The steel seemed to hold an edge decently, at least as good as a SOG folder in AUS-8, if not better.

I really like that new Wharncliffe Boker.

nice comparsion picture 3mptin3ss! is that last knife on the a LEEK? i ask because i was wondering if the clip from the LEEK would work on the BOKER RESSURRECTION? :D

I don't have the knife on me atm (short holiday) but the liner's got what looks like striations running down the length of it, sort of like girders?
When I get back to Holland I will post pictures of it.

From these pictures, it appears that there are striations on the blade tang, where it meets the lock face. Is that what you're talking about?

Also, just going off of the pictures, those liners don't look quite as thick as the ones Kershaw uses on the JYD II, the G-10 Tyrade, or the ZT 350, unless of course the blade is a heck of a lot thicker than the ones on the Kershaws.

No, I mean the ones on the locking liner, as you can see on the photo. They are much coarser than the thin ones on the bottom of the blade tang.

The blade is indeed thicker, although I wouldn't call it a heck of a lot thicker. ;) I haven't measured them, the difference will be in the tenths of millimeters.

IMO the knives coming out of Taiwan are significantly better than the knives coming out of mainland China.

Remember - it's still Taiwan R.O.C. (Republic Of China) no matter what Taiwan says or wants. My experience in tool buying has been the same as yours in knife buying. Overall, Taiwanese is better than Chinese. But in regards to tools, with Makita, Jet, etc. now moving (as well as many others) their facilities and tooling to mainland China, the picture gets more cloudy.

The Milwaukee tool rep told me that many companies are moving to mainland China because of continued tensions with Taiwan, but many critical parts of machines, tooling and machinery are still made in Taiwan. When assembled, the needed parts are simply shipped across 25 - 30 miles of water to mainland China.

Like almost all power tools these days, their stamped country of origin may be their last stop on the way here, assembled with parts from all over the world.

I wouldn't be too surprised to see knives follow suit. Why wouldn't they? After all, to the bean counters they are simply widgets moving through the system.

The blades on the G-10 Tyrades are .157" thick, 4mm thick, which is 5/32". I think the thinner liner, .060" on the Boker, makes it's blade seem thicker.:)

Buy cheap, buy twice.

Save up and buy the ZT0300, once you own it, you'll understand why - It's 'More' in every respect. The ZT0300 starts to rival Strider/Chris Reeve folders in terms of solidity, materials, fit and finish (And no-nonsense guarantee) and that's a big claim.

And the S30V used on the 0300 is a superior steel, big edge holding advantage over 440C

Having owned all of the knives under discussion here, excepting the Boker, in this price bracket I'd chose the 0350 over any of the Kershaw folders. The JYD II Composite is a fine knife, but the blade is a bit thin for my tastes - Certainly for something with that much depth to the blade. The only real disadvantage to the 0350 (Same as 0300) in the price bracket is the re-curve cutting edge - Shame it's not straight; it would be so much easier to get a really fine edge on.

The blade on the ZT0350 is the same thickness as the JYDII. Liners are also the same thickness.

In the past couple of years Boker has begun building some very capable knives, ones able to compete with a lot of the knives that come from here, USA. I say this a lot, but I bought a Boker Titan Defender at the end of October 2009, and it has come the closest to replicating a custom built knife as I've had. Of course it cost as much as some of the lower priced customs so the build better be good!:D:thumbup:

to me the boker "mini" burke is a great knife for the price! i payed 43.00 shipped for mine. :D i think it's a very sturdy knife. the only thing that looked cheap on it'is the backspacer. that says china on it. :D other than that looks "usa" quailty. :)

Beside 100+ folders I have several Tyrades, I love them (superb knives ), so I bought the Böker Plus Burke Resurrection too. It said Made in Taiwan and looked like a very tough HD folder.

But I had very bad experiences with this modell. It costed ~80 euro, but the internal finish was EXTREMLY poor.
What I mean? Althought the blade fit 'n' finish were good (Taiwan made, sure), the quality of the liners, the lock and washers were below chinese junkyard factory standard.

-The blade's finish was quite good, but the liners were covered entirely with rust from the box

-The liner lock looked like it was pounded with a hammer to lock the blade. Heavy duty, eh? :thumbdn:

-The washers were from yellow brass, and they had exremely rough surface.

After ~4 hours of continous polishing, it looked like an average factory standard. I thing this great design deserves a quality finish (particularly for this price tag). I'm extremely disappointed this kind of "quality".

In our hungarian forum were some rumours about other loose locked exemplars, with little rust inside too. :( I have some better finished cheap chinese fakes... :thumbdn:
I hope the Böker's representatives will look after those serious quality issues. (We warned the local distributor about the problem.)

There were some picture issues, the entire process could be seen here:
