Pop Quiz Hot Shot! SHTF and you need a fire!

If I'm out of bed, I have pants on. If my pants are on, I have a firesteel on my keyring, a packet of Neosporin in my wallet (petroleum jelly), a handkerchief in my left pocket. I also have a knife on my always. If I can't find and make workable tinder, I could smear Neosporin on my handkerchief and light it with the firesteel.

I carry 24/7, so I always have access to 10 rounds of .38 Special. I could break open the smokeless powder if really needed to get things going. It could flash dry moist tinder. If windy, I would embed it in the Neosporin to keep it in place.

Good question. Good food for thought.

Doan magnesium block (always on my belt - held on with small piece of 550), Mini Bic in case, 35-40 feet of 550, Benchmade AFCK, Buck Alpha Dorado and Vic Spirit MTto make hearths, handrills, bowdrills etc. All these items are EDC, so TF, I guess you lose! :D

Oh, and did I mention a magnifying glass?

Doc

Doc,

I AM losing here - big time. Hey! Your glasses do not count as magnifiers... although at your age - I could probably read someones thoughts with YOUR prescription! ;)

TF

Hi all.

Mick a spoon? LOL

TF you said a quick fire I think. Now if I have to go and collect the bow drill items then give me a few more minutes LOL.

Bryan

Well you did not say a quick fire I just looked back at the post. Any ways You still did not have a firesteel with you. I am in shock LOL

G'day TF

You raise an interesting point.

Those who are long sighted can use their glasses as a magnifying lens, because their prescription will be for converging lenses.

Short sighted people generally have prescribed diverging lenses which won't focus the light to a tight spot.

Kind regards
Mick

Today I had a Case Peanut, A Wenger SI, two Bic lighters (one full size and one mini) and what is in my wallet, paper. Vehicle registration, proof of insurance and a couple receipts. All good dry tinder.

(un)Fortunately I live in a crowded suburban neighborhood so a vehicle, building, or house was in plain sight at all times. I'm never far from gasoline and a spark as long as I'm within 20 miles of home.

the OP is exactly why I have a mini magnesium with ferro rod and a mini SAK on my key chain.

i have a one hand treker and a military match on the key chain goes everywhere with me except the airport, wallet with paper tinder, that should get me a fire.

I have lazer heat vision..so I'm pretty much set...Seriously though...I carry my scandi knife in my edc bag along with a ferro, matches, a lighter and 3 forms.. I also have the makings of a bowdrill on me in case I need to make a smoke screen and burn some holes in wood without actually getting a fire LOL

Unfortunately, we are still in a "burn-ban"...so I'm out of luck and will die of hypothermia:grumpy:

On the bright side, I usually have a light on me and I'm heading out of the house, I'll have my Swiss Spirit on the belt in a Leatherman sheath with a small firesteel in one of the side pockets...plus another foldier or two.

Shoot the hostage?

But anyway I always have at least a bic lighter with me, that and some cloth from clothing items (pockets have been mentioned) or some receipts from my wallet should make some passable tinder. I also carry chapstick most of the time, so this could be used to cover the cloth.
In my car I have a small kit with a firesteel and some PJCBs in it. If I'm going to be out in the bush I will throw a hatchet and small log into my jeep as well, so I can get a fire going before I have to go start looking for more fuel. I also keep a small propane heater in my car (the kind that screw onto the top of the bottles) so I imagine I could start a fire that way as well.

I keep a hot spark on my key ring as well as a small spy capsule loaded w/ PJCB's. As a smoker I also have a couple of lighters on me as well.

There are plenty of hemlock trees around me as well as Cedar and Birch, so even with out the PJCB's I can get a fire going pretty quick.

When it comes to Bow Drill method, I am not that great at getting it, so I hope I never have to depend on that. It rains alot over here and the moisture content in wood is really high, making getting a coal with freshly cut basswood a real PIA! I never tried it with freshly cut White Cedar as the only White Cedar around me is decorating people's front yards.

my EDC includes a Case stockman and a lighter of some kind. lately i switched out the Bic for a neat little lighter that's about the same size, but isn't affected when it gets dropped in the snow. it works like a zippo, with the same fuel holding mechanism etc.

i would say i am least prepared when i'm running, often taking nothing. i have started carrying an opinel #7 and a Bic on me though. i usually run around town though. at worst, i take the bike trail which runs parallel (about 20 feet away) to a road that i could crawl to if something happened.

but i have used my EDC items to get a fire going when out for a walk at night, she was chilly and there was noone else around, and there was a good supply of smaller, dry wood handy. ;)

Well I don’t usually pack for the wilderness in suburbia but with what I have in my pocket at any given time I would have my Swiss Army knife and the Ken Onion leek, my Zippo and my wallet. There are paper receipts in my wallet that I can use to start a fire. I have shoe laces of course and have practiced the technique of starting a fire with a bow, not my favorite way to go but I can do it.
I’ve been making key chain fobs out of pitch pine but I haven’t attached one to my key ring yet…..OK it’s attached now :) thanks.

my EDC consists of:
-a firsteel from this site here Ranger version

-3x4 piece of aluminum foil folded to credit card size in wallet to hold water (and other uses)

-pocket knife

- 3 cotton balls w/ Vaseline in the middle for tinder, which is placed in the middle of my aluminum credit card foil

-small zip lock back w/ fine shavings of fatwood in wallet
and my wallet size is still normal :)
-also a lighter since I smoke:o

If I have my pants on, I have:

* firesteel (key ring)
* piece of hacksaw blade (key ring)
* pill fob with half a vasaline cotton ball in it (key ring)
* 2 feet of 550 cord braided. One end attached to my key ring, the other end attached to a caribiner which clips to my belt loop and hangs my keys in my pack pocket.
* Leatherman Wave, with saw (on belt.)
* Case Texas Jack (front pocket)
* Mini Bic ligher (front pocket)

* Oh yeah, my leatherman case, also has another firesteel, and a piece of fatwood incorporated into it.

Any normal day, I would have a fire going in short order, but this last week it has been raining cats and dogs 24/7, so it would have been real tough.

Don't mean to be critical, but sometime, you might want to take out that piece of alluminum foil, and try making it hold water. A lot of people have found that foil gets little tiny holes in it from being tightly folded for long periods.

That's just what I've heard mind you, I don't have any first hand experience with it. Just thought I"d throw it out there.

I would have no problem. I always have two knives on me, plus firestarting supplies.

Today it was my RC4 and a benchmade 740 for the knives.

for firestarting I had my matchsafe with around 20 matches as well as a strikeforce firestarter.
