Pop Quiz Hot Shot! SHTF and you need a fire!

If I have my pants on, I have:

* pill fob with half a vasaline cotton ball in it (key ring)
* 2 feet of 550 cord braided. One end attached to my key ring, the other end attached to a caribiner which clips to my belt loop and hangs my keys in my pack pocket.

I bought a half-dozen of the neat aluminum pill capsules from Going Gear. I got out the cotton balls and petroleum jelly and did up six. I made the mistake of forcing a whole pj-soaked cotton ball into each capsule (I rammed them in with a punch). They're in so tight, I don't know if I could manage to pick them out to use them!

Great idea on the key keeper. I always worry about losing my keys when I'm in the woods. I need to make up a paracord/clip rig like yours so they can stay in my pocket, but still be secured against loss.

Stay sharp,
desmobob

I have a peanut lighter and sak classic on the keychain (thinking about adding a hotspark or mini-magbar and small spy capsule with pjcbs), and always have my farmer and delica on me. If I'm going, at, or coming from work I have my edc backpack with a PSK in it (with a dedicated fire kit).

Where are you guys getting the little keyring firesteels?

(can that be posted:foot:)

I just got a bunch of blank 1/4" firesteels off ebay, then drilled it out and put a small key ring on it, then attached it to my main key ring with snap swivel(fishing tackle).

It helps to file the end you want to drill, flat first, then drill it. Just do it all, slowly and carefully.

I am a smoker, there is a lighter in my pants pocket, another in my vest, one in my jacket, a couple in the car, and so on. My range bag lives in the car as well and in it are several 9 volt batteries for timer, headset and a couple replacements as well as steel wool.

And yes, I do know how to start a fire with a bow and drill and have done it before.

I have a LMF and Aurora fire steel, in my bag, in the truck of my car. After this post, I think I'm going to move the Aurora to my keychain. Otherwise, I'd us my Game warden and paracord/shoelace to start my "quick" fire. OK, I'm going to my car right now to get the Aurora and put it on my keychain. Cold, wet and dark (especially when others rely on you) is not a time to be using a bow drill, unless absolutely necessary.

I did just order one of these Mini-BIC sheaths for a zipper pull though:

I always carry a Vic Farmer or Rucksak, each has a braided paracord lanyard with the above mentioned BSA Hotspark. I'll admit though, I've been getting lax on the tinder. I used to carry a 2'' length of 1/4" plastic tubing stuffed with cotton/pj. I'd push grease fittings into the ends to seal it. I used the fittings because they press fit perfectly into the tubing and they'd make good sinkers as well. Today I'd have been stuck with clothing or natural (wet) materials. The tubing's going back on my keychain. :)

I also carry a magnifying glass for fire starting/splinter removal/and for the frequent times I lose or forget cheap reading glasses.

Don't mean to be critical, but sometime, you might want to take out that piece of alluminum foil, and try making it hold water. A lot of people have found that foil gets little tiny holes in it from being tightly folded for long periods.

That's just what I've heard mind you, I don't have any first hand experience with it. Just thought I"d throw it out there.

hey thanks! never thought about that, taking it out right now :)

has anyone here ever seen or used these...
