Elliott I don't really know you, and don't take this to heart. But you suck:p
Man o man would I love to have any one of those porkers.
Thanks for showing them.

I'm sorry but I have to say it.:o

Those are some PHAT sows!:D

I'm late to this party, Elliott and I don't have any sowbellies. But, I have to say that trapper version is very nice. I like them all.

Richard's certainly well represented in this thread.

Appreciate all the comments, fellas.:thumbup:

Absolutely beautiful knives, guys! Now you've aroused my curiosity ..... they look like they would feel great in the hand ..... do they?

Absolutely, Keith! Great both in the pocket and the hand! It's a curvy beast with a substantial feel due to the frame.
(It's kind of like someone took a "cattle knife" and decided to throw a shallow "S" curve into it.)

Thanks Elliott! It sure looks like, for any given size of knife, a sowbelly would "feel bigger" than almost any other pattern. While I'm not yet up to buying a custom knife, financially or otherwise, I may have to "snout" around and see if I can find a user! ;)

I would definitely try out a production knife in the pattern to see if it is to your liking. If so, then you have something to put on your "to do" list for down the road.

Elliot, WOW! I don't own any sowbellies, but I can't for the life of me figure out why not. Every time I see them, I just can't imagine any knife that's much prettier.

I see some pork in your future!:thumbup:

Wonderful knives! I'm going to have to try one out. Is it customary for Sowbellies to come without halfstops?

I don't know *why* they started using this particular shield way back, but it was essentially the standard shield on this pattern, even across manufacturers (though the precise shape would vary a bit, it was quite recognizable as the same basic concept).

There were of course a lot of exceptions, but when the various sowbelly patterns from various companies had a shield in common, the swimsuit shield was it.

I've also just realized that the various sowbelly patterns usually had single threaded bolsters - even more often than that shield.

Thanks for the bit of history Dwight.

Elliot that Dowell trapper is different, not to mention beautiful. I like everones interpretation of that swimsuit shield.

Most don't have half stops, some do. You can request the maker leave 'em off if he is one that normally incorporates them.

Steve, Bret's work is not only top notch, it's a bargain to boot.
