Post Holiday Clearance thread for Walmart 2007 holiday tins

Walmart buys from suppliers with the understanding they are paying this price for an item to be sold at this price, and Walmart holds a part of the payment for awhile and then takes charges against the balance they are holding if they have to reduce the selling price. They may or may not do this with Buck, but I know others that they do it to......They feel yiu have to play by their rules and the percentage of mark up remains the same. In a post on the 2005 tins there was a quote form I believe Joe Houser that stated he hoped that Wlamart did not have to mark down many of the 2006 tins because they could take the "hit".....

I see you wrote a review at the Walmart site. I did too after seeing that vague review (below yours). But for some reason my positive review never showed up.

I got one of the tins for Christmas, from my daughters and really love it...

I just fought off the compulsion to buy one of the marked down ones online at WalMart. I'll save them for you guys....

bought 10 for $15/EACH today. friends and family are going to love me next b day and X mas. Wish I didn't buy one and open it at $30.

I saw about 20 of the buck tins yesterday on the shelf. Marked down to $21. I'm waiting for them to go lower.

Walmart would have already paid Buck much lower than the price at markdown at this point. Walmart probably had negoitated a $10-$12 per knife.

As I understand, Walmart does not pay anyone anything until it has been scanned at the front register, then it is put on list of payables. Why do you think they are so liberal on returns, they simply charge it back to the supplier, even if it was abuse. They do not care about the supplier. If they mark them down, you will know it will be Buck that takes the hit.

So it goes with Wally World.

I could be wrong, if I am, someone who sells to Wally correct me.

Ok, lets assume that is the case. Buck sure doesn't want them back, that is why they got into Walmart with these tins for several years now. Its about volume. They would have this type of thing already accounted for. They would have expected it. A vast number of companies try to get there products in Walmart. Yes, they expect to make a smaller profit when they do, but they plan to drastically increase production and sales volume. They make less per knife, but they make more profit overall by selling the volume. They get to spread their fixed costs over many more knives. There is a point with all business that to much volume actually starts to lose money. Law of diminishing returns. Buck would have plenty of good accountants, finanace people, mgmt and others that have analyzed this and know what they are doing.

Buck would much rather sell the merchandise NOW and make even $1 than to have it set on the shelf for months or even years and not get paid at all.

So, no it would be in Bucks best interest for every single knife in the holiday tins to be sold for cheap. But, as many have already seen, most sold at the $30 price anyway. That was exactly what Buck and Walmart expected.

I bought one at $30 before Christmas...honestly, it wasn't worth the $30. The quality on this special edition was not the same as the normal 110. I have several of the holiday 110's from a couple of years ago and the quality is better. But I expected that from a knife that was designed to be sold in quantity at Walmart that was a special run. They are not terrible quality, just not exactly the same. Then again, none made in the last few years (off shelf standard 110's) are as good a quality as my older 110's.

65hoss...

Could you elaborate on why this years tin is of lesser quality in your opinion? Also, could you tell me how the regular 110 differs in quality from your older ones? Is it build quality, materials, consistency? If you don't want to post in this thread, maybe you can start another one.

I'd like to know as I have not handled many older 110's and am curious. I have noticed that there is a huge bump in quality with the custom shop versus the regular 110...but obviously there is a jump in price as well.

Thanks a lot

Be glad to expand on it, as I said above, they are not terrible quality, just not exactly the same. I have both tin models sitting in front of me right now. The main thing that makes it not as good to me is the chrome/polishing that was put on for the "special edition". You can just tell it was done for effect. All the current tins have a open package so you can see each blade on the shelf. I picked the best looking one I could find when I bought mine. Its acceptable, but not great by any stretch. It makes it look cheap, IMHO. I guess you could say the quality problem is the attempt to make it look flashy, but it falls short of what I would expect from Buck, except for the fact that I know these are quickly done because of quantity for walmart means smaller profit.

The 110's made in recent years have more side to side and up and down blade play than those made in the past. Go back to 2 yrs ago threads and read all the people getting them and complaining about blade play. I bought 4 back then, all had some, none were terrible but some none the less. When I compared them with my older ones, you could tell a difference. The 420HC is a good steel for getting extremely sharp, but its not a good steel for holding the edge. Its also brittle at the tip. With mild use and no prying I broke the tip of one. The older ones were 440c and needless to say...extremely reliable.

I would buy more of this seasons tin models, but not at the $30 price they listed at. A good user (within reason of course) they will be.

Thanks! I did notice that the mirror blade was sloppy compared to my custom shop one.

Walmart in Casselberry.....just north of Orlando.....has at least a dozen of the 110 sets. Also has several of the Chinese sets but did not even look at them because when at all possible I DON'T BUY CHINESE!

As of yesterday (1/15) the Taylorville, IL Walmart had ten 110 sets and six of the 3 knife sets, priced at $15.

I know of two BCCI members who have searched high and low with no luck in our local WalMart stores for Founder's Edition 110s offered for the 2007 holiday season. We need a good samaritan to purchase one for each of us and send them to us separately in Indiana and South San Francisco, CA. Of course, we will send payment right out (have you heard the check is in the mail?!!););)
The two poor souls in need are Larry Oden and Bruce Dollinger. If you are willing and able to help, please email me. I can provide snail mail addresses.
Thanks,
Larry

I can do that, will need to know what type of handle they want. All are
rosewood but some are very dark and some are light with a vary visible
grain. Also do they want more than one each as i do not think mailing costs
will be muck greater for two. I will do this for my cost but be aware there
is a 7% sales tax in Florida (I will send receipt). Get back to me as soon
as possible and i'm off to purchase as Wal-Mart is only several blocks from
me. Think they can help getting me the latest BCCI knife at a reasonable
cost. Joe.
